Hörður Björgvin Magnússon (born February 11, 1993 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic national football player . The defender began playing for the Icelandic national soccer team in 2014 and was nominated for the 2016 European Championship and 2018 World Cup . At club level, he played in Iceland for Fram Reykjavík and then moved to Italy to record champions Juventus Turin , where he was only used in the junior team and was awarded to the second division Spezia Calcio and AC Cesena . After a guest appearance at Bristol City , he has been playing for CSKA Moscow since 2018 .
Career
society
Hörður played his first league game for Fram Reykjavík on August 30, 2009 at the age of 16 and brought it to three league games during the season. In 2010 there were three more games at the end of the season, then he moved to Italy to Juventus Turin , but initially only played in the junior team. In 2013 he was loaned to the second division club Spezia Calcio . From 2014 he played on loan at newly promoted Cesena , first in the Serie A , but increased at the end of the season with the club again and then played in the Serie B . For the 2016/2017 season he moved to the English second division club Bristol City . After 17th and 11th place, he moved to Russia to CSKA Moscow for the 2018/2019 season , where he won his first title with the Super Cup, in which he was also used. In the championship, however, it was only enough for fourth place. As runners-up in the 2017/18 season, ZSKA qualified directly for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League . Hörður was used in the two defeats against AS Roma and the win at Real Madrid on the last day of the group, but that didn't change anything about the elimination. Since they were only fourth in the group, they could not play in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League . In the 2019/20 season, however , they were directly for the group stage of the Europa League, but were eliminated there as well as fourth.
National team
In 2009 he first took part with the U-17 in the Nordic U-17 championship and then in the first qualifying round of the U-17 European football championship in 2010 , which Iceland did not survive.
He had already played several international matches with the U-19 team in 2009 and took part in the first qualifying round of the 2011 U-19 European Football Championship in October 2010 . There they were eliminated as third party group. Things went even worse in 2011 in the first qualifying round of the U-19 European Football Championship in 2012 .
In 2012 he took part with the U-21 team in the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2013 , but failed as the bottom of the group. A year later things went better. In qualifying for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2015 , they finished second in the group, but failed in the play-offs due to the away goals rule to Denmark .
On November 12, 2014, Hörður made his debut for the national team in a friendly against Belgium , playing over 90 minutes. Four days later he sat on the bench in the European Championship qualification against the Czech Republic . He was not nominated for the friendly games against Canada in January 2015 , instead he played with Cesena in the league. He was only invited back in March, on the dates set by FIFA for international matches, but initially only sat on the bench against Kazakhstan . He played in the first half of the friendly against Estonia on March 31, 2015 . For the remaining European Championship qualifiers, in which Iceland secured a finals participation for the first time, he was then not taken into account. It was not until November that he was invited to the two friendlies but not set up. The January training camp in the United Arab Emirates , to which mostly players from the paused Northern European leagues were invited, took place without him, as did the subsequent trip to the USA. He was not nominated again until March 2016 and played his third international match against Denmark on March 24, 2016 , this time again for the full season. On May 12, 2016 he was appointed to the squad for the European Championship 2016 by coach Lars Lagerbäck as a player with the second few international matches . He was one of four field players who were not used in the tournament. The quarter-finals were reached at the country's first ever European Championship appearance.
He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Hörður was left-back in all three games.
In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he was used in three of the four defeats. In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he was used in five out of ten games. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Icelanders still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
