Gabriel Ivan Mercado (born March 18, 1987 in Puerto Madryn ) is an Argentine football player who has played in defense at Sevilla FC in Spain since 2016 .

In Argentina , he previously played at Racing Club and Estudiantes de La Plata and River Plate . With River he won the Copa Libertadores ( 2015 ).

As part of the Argentine U-20 national team , he won the U-20 World Cup ( 2007 ) and later the Superclásico de las Américas ( 2017 ) with the Argentine national soccer team .

Mercado comes from the youth of Racing Club from Avellanada . In the 2006/07 season he came from February 21, 2007 against CA San Lorenzo to his first appearances for the professional team in the Argentine Primera División . From then on he was an integral and important part of the defense of his team.

In July 2010, he moved to league rivals Estudiantes de La Plata . After two years with this club, he finally joined River Plate in the summer of 2012.

In August 2016, Mercado moved to Spain for Sevilla FC, where he received a three-year contract. He played as a regular among the various coaches in Seville. In total, he played 117 games for Sevilla and scored 6 goals, including two in derbies. During his 2nd and 3rd seasons he was one of the captains of his team. With Sevilla he qualified for the Champions League and twice for the UEFA Europa League. He also played the Copa América final in 2018.

Gabriel Mercado signed a contract to finish his career at Seville on June 30th. 2019, to play for Al-Rayyan SC as the number 25 defender.

National team

After Mercado had already competed with the Argentine U20 team at the Sudamericana Sub-20 , the South American U20 championship , he was also part of the South American country's squad at the 2007 Junior World Cup in Canada , which Argentina won. In the final they defeated the Czech Republic 2-1. He played a total of eleven games for the U-20s.

On February 11, 2010, he was appointed by Diego Maradona to make his international debut in the Argentine national football team. In the 2-1 win over Jamaica he found himself in the starting line-up and was replaced in the 88th minute for Ignacio Canuto , who scored the winning goal just two minutes later.

Mercado also took part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia .
