Robbie Kruse at his first training session with VfB Stuttgart

Robbie Kruse played in her youth at the Queensland Academy of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport . He later received professional contracts with Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory . In Germany, Kruse played as a striker for the German second division Fortuna Düsseldorf from the summer of 2011 . While he was only used in the preliminary round in the 2011/12 promotion season, Kruse was a regular player from the 2012/13 Bundesliga season , in which Fortuna Düsseldorf was relegated directly. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on November 10, 2012 (11th matchday) in a 1-1 home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . On February 2, 2013, he helped his team to a 3-1 home game win against VfB Stuttgart with two goals .

In April 2013, Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen announced that they would sign the Australian for a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros, although his current contract with Fortuna ran until 2014. The reason for his departure was, according to his own statements, that he wanted to develop as a footballer. Kruse scored his only two goals for Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 6 on September 21, 2013 in a 4-1 away win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . He played in 15 preliminary round games, and was mostly substituted on. In January 2014 he tore a cruciate ligament . On October 4, 2014, he played in the league for the first time and came to a few short appearances. On January 31, 2015, he suffered an ankle injury in the final of the Asian Cup . Only at the end of the season could he start training again.

On August 31, 2015, VfB Stuttgart signed Kruse on loan. As part of a purchase option, Stuttgart also secured the opportunity to sign Kruse firmly. Kruse was used in four of 18 possible competitive games and did not play in any from the start. On February 1, 2016, he returned to Leverkusen early.

On January 22, 2017 it was announced that he was moving to China to join the first division club Liaoning Hongyun with immediate effect . In May 2017 he and his teammate James Holland terminated his contract.

On July 21, 2017, he signed a contract with VfL Bochum. Together with his Austrian team-mate Kevin Stöger , he is now considered to be "a duo that brings VfL points." "The fast Australian is certainly VfL's strongest newcomer so far." the offensive player's contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended in the spring.

At the end of July 2019, the Australian returned home to the first division side Melbourne Victory, with whom he received a two-year contract. There he also met his former Bochum team-mate Tim Hoogland , who moved to Melbourne in August.

National team

Kruse made his debut for the senior team of Australia on January 5, 2011 against the United Arab Emirates . He reached the final of the 2011 Asian Cup with the selection of his home country. In the final of the 2015 Asian Cup , Kruse was on the starting line-up for Australia and became Asian champion with the host. As part of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Kruse was appointed to the squad of the Australian national team. There Australia was eliminated after the preliminary round, but Kruse played in all three games.
