Trent Sainsbury started his football career in his hometown Perth with the local Armadale SC . Later he was drawn to the WATA youth academy . From 2008 to 2009 he played in the youth of the Australian first division club Perth Glory . A year later he moved on to the Australian Institute of Sport , whose squad of the National Youth League he was part of during the 2009-10 season.

The following summer made the step into professional football and switched to the Central Coast Mariners , who had just finished the season in eighth place in the A-League. In November 2010 Sainsbury came to his first assignments. He made his professional debut against Brisbane Roar on November 28th. 2010/11 he played a total of eight games during the regular season and one game in the playoffs.

The center-back played the same number of games during the following season , when he made his debut in the AFC Champions League against South Korean club Seongnam . In January 2012 he signed a contract valid until 2014. The club won the regular season , but failed in the playoffs in the semi-finals.

In the 2012/13 season he made his breakthrough as a regular player and played 24 games in the regular season . On April 20, 2013 he was able to celebrate winning the Australian championship after a 2-0 win against the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Grand Final . Sainsbury was voted Team of the Year by the Players' Union and named Player of the Year by fellow players. During the last week of the 2012/13 season, he was a guest test player at the top Swiss club FC Basel , which however did not sign him.

Sainsbury's start to the 2013/14 season was successful. After three particularly convincing appearances, he was named the best U-21 player of October. In November 2013 he extended his contract with the Mariners, which originally expired at the end of the season, until summer 2016. On December 31, 2013, he scored his first goal in the A-League in his 56th mission.

In January 2014, after four years in which he played 69 competitive games (two goals) for the Mariners, he moved to the Dutch Eredivisie for PEC Zwolle . There he signed a contract valid until summer 2016 including an option for another year. On February 6 of the same year he made his debut for his new club in a 2-1 win at FC Utrecht , but injured his knee in the same game. For this reason, he also missed the surprising cup win over Ajax Amsterdam in April of the same year. On April 14, he made his comeback in a game of the second team, but he did not play another game for the pros in 2013/14.

On August 3, he made his comeback in the game against champions Ajax. After a 1-0 win, he was able to celebrate winning the Supercup . In the Europa League playoffs at the end of August, he made his debut in a UEFA competition. The team failed but at Sparta Prague , so that the entry into the main round was missed.

Sainsbury moved to Jiangsu Suning in 2016 . In January 2017 he was at Inter Milan awarded, but completed only one game in the Serie A . Since the summer of 2017 he played again for Jiangsu Suning until he was transferred to the second team in July 2018. As a result, Sainsbury terminated his contract with Jiangsu Suning.

In mid-August 2020 he moved to the Belgian first division partner KV Kortrijk , where he signed a contract with a term of two years.

National team

Sainsbury went through both the U-16 and U-17 teams of Australia . In 2011 he took part in the World Cup in Colombia with the U-20 national team, but failed with his team in the group stage. Sainsbury's were in the starting line-up in all three games, but the team only picked up one point from a draw in their first group game against Ecuador.

At the East Asian Championship he was part of the Australian senior team for the first time in July 2013. In the tournament, however, he was the only player not used.

After a protracted knee injury, Sainsbury missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . National coach Ange Postecoglou originally wanted to nominate him for the tournament.

On September 5, 2014 he made his debut for the senior national team in a 2-0 friendly defeat against Belgium in Liège. In total, he played four friendlies for Australia in 2014.

At the Asian Cup in their own country in January 2015, Sainsbury was part of the squad and was on the starting line-up in all games. He scored his first international goal in the semi-final against the United Arab Emirates . On January 31, the team won the final 2-1 against South Korea . In this game, Sainsbury was voted Player of the match .

He was also in the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Australia was eliminated in the preliminary round after two defeats against France and Peru and a draw against Denmark . Sainsbury played all three games as a central defender. At the 2019 Asian Cup , he was on the pitch in four out of five possible games. Australia were eliminated there in the quarterfinals.

Style of play

At the beginning of his career, Sainsbury mainly played as a right-back, but now he's used in the center-back position. His former coach Phil Moss praised him for his physique and his attitude. Furthermore, he is certified to be able to read the game. According to the technical director of the PEC Zwolle, his strengths lie in tackling, building up the game and a good header game. He is considered to be one of the greatest defensive talents in his country.
