After a preliminary round, consisting of a first and a second round, the league was divided into two groups of six: the best six teams played in the championship round for the title and the international starting positions, the six worst teams against relegation. Half of the points achieved in the preliminary round were credited (half points are rounded up).
Compared to the 2012/13 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: Melita FC and Ħamrun Spartans rose as the last and penultimate teams in the playout group in the First Division (second highest division) and were replaced by Naxxar Lions and Vittoriosa Stars replaced.
Only a few stadiums in Malta have the necessary infrastructure to hold regular Premier League matches. These were Ta 'Qali Stadium , Victor Tedesco Stadium , and Hibernians Football Ground . Each team has its own training area, but usually no matches are played on it. The games therefore usually take place on neutral ground, which essentially makes the distinction between home and away games obsolete.
