Alfred Effiong (born November 29, 1984 in Lagos ) is a Maltese football player of Nigerian descent.

Career

Effiong has been playing for various clubs in Malta since 2006 and is regularly one of the top scorer in the Maltese Premier League . In the 2010/11 season he was the top scorer for the first time with 17 goals, in 2011/12 he was champion and cup winner with FC Valletta . On June 28, 2011, he scored his first goal in an international competition in a qualifying game for the UEFA Champions League , opponent was SP Tre Fiori from San Marino , the game was won 3-0 by Valletta.

National team

Effiong made his debut for his adopted country of Malta on March 25, 2015 in a 2-0 defeat by Georgia , he came on in the 60th minute for Jean Paul Farrugia . He gained greater fame with a remarkable goal in the form of an arc lamp outside the penalty area against Lithuania , Malta won the game 2-0. He scored three more goals each against Azerbaijan , Estonia and Scotland , the latter with a header.

Private

He was born and raised in Lagos , Nigeria's largest city. Effiong has lived in Malta since 2005 , and in 2010 he married his girlfriend Charlene and has two children with her. He acquired Maltese citizenship on February 26, 2015.
