The First Division 1977/78 was the 63rd season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . The championship was for the tenth time the FC Valletta .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Marsa and FC Birkirkara replaced the relegated Żebbuġ Rangers and Senglea Athletics . Both were first class again since the 1975/76 season .

mode

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
