Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Birkirkara and Ħamrun Spartans took part. Birkirkara was represented for the first time since the 1968/69 season , Ħamrun since the 1969/70 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to be relegated to the Second Division.
