The 1988/89 Maltese Premier League was the 74th season in the history of the Maltese top football league . The Sliema Wanderers became champions for the 22nd time .

Compared to the previous season , promoted Rabat Ajax and Naxxar Lions replaced relegated FC Mosta . Rabat was first class again since the 1986/87 season , Naxxar for the first time since the 1948/49 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
