The 1989/90 Maltese Premier League was the 75th season in the history of the Maltese top football league . The championship was for the 13th time the FC Valletta .

Compared to the previous season , the promoted Tarxien Rainbows and Żebbuġ Rangers replaced the relegated Rabat Ajax and FC Birkirkara . Tarxien was first class again since the 1986/87 season , Żebbuġ for the first time since the 1982/83 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
