The Maltese Premier League 2000/01 was the 86th season in the history of the Maltese top football league . The championship was for the 18th time the FC Valletta .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted Ħamrun Spartans and Xgħajra Tornadoes replaced the relegated FC Gozo and FC Żurrieq . Ħamrun was first class again since the 1998/99 season , Xgħajra for the first time since the 1997/98 season .

mode

First, a preliminary round with home and away legs was played. The first six teams qualified for the championship round, the remaining four for the relegation round. Half of the points achieved in the preliminary round were taken over, rounded up if necessary. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was provided for the decision about the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
