The First Division 1979/80 was the 65th season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . FC Valletta became champions for the eleventh time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Birkirkara and Żebbuġ Rangers replaced the relegated FC Għaxaq and FC Msida Saint Joseph . Birkirkara was first class since the 1977/78 season , Żebbuġ since the 1976/77 season again.

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last three placed had to relegate to the Second Division.
