The 1999/2000 Maltese Premier League was the 85th season in the history of the Maltese top football league . FC Birkirkara became champions for the first time .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted FC Gozo and FC Żurrieq replaced the relegated FC Żabbar St. Patrick and Ħamrun Spartans . Gozo was first class, Żurrieq for the first time since the 1995/96 season .

mode

First, a preliminary round with home and away legs was played. The first six teams qualified for the championship round, the remaining four for the relegation round. Half of the points achieved in the preliminary round were taken over, rounded up if necessary. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was provided for the decision about the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
