The 1996/97 Maltese Premier League was the 82nd season in the history of the Maltese top football league . The championship was for the 15th time the FC Valletta .

Compared to the previous season , the newly promoted Pietà Hotspurs and Lija Athletics replaced the relegated FC Żabbar St. Patrick and FC Żurrieq . Lija was first class, Pietà for the first time since the 1994/95 season .

The season was played as a triple round. d. H. each team played each other three times. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was provided for the decision about the championship and the relegation places. The last two placed had to relegate to the First Division.
