Gonzalo "Gonzo" Castro Randón (born June 11, 1987 in Wuppertal ) is a German - Spanish soccer player . He has been under contract with VfB Stuttgart since the 2018/19 season and is mainly used in central midfield , but can also play as a full -back.

Club career

Beginnings

Castro's parents come from the south of Spain, from where they emigrated to Germany when they were around 20 years old. Castro began his career at Post SV Wuppertal. Further stations during his youth were Viktoria Rott and SV Bayer Wuppertal .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

In 1999 Castro moved to the youth team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . For the 2004/05 season he was promoted to the Leverkusen professional team. He played his first game in the Bundesliga in January 2005 when he had a brief appearance on matchday 18 in the away win against Hannover 96 . Despite his young age of only 17, he has also been used in the Champions League . During the entire season he made 13 league appearances and was always on the starting line-up from day 24.

In the 2005/06 season he was regularly used variably in the first half of the season on the defensive and in the midfield. In the second half of the season he was only a substitute player and also played in the second team. In total, he came to 21 Bundesliga games. From 2006 Castro moved from defensive midfield to the defensive line of Leverkusen and played his way into the starting line-up with solid performances. From the 2007/08 season , Castro was initially used in the right-back position. For the 2011/12 season he also played in the right midfield position.

In the meantime he was also employed as a left defender, but since the 2012/13 season Castro played more offensively in midfield. Due to his consistency, he had become one of the most important Leverkusen players, which was also reflected in the playing times: Castro almost always played through in 31 league games and scored six goals.

In the 2013/14 season , Castro had one of his most successful seasons for Leverkusen personally with five goals and ten assists in 30 games. In the 2014/15 season , Castro struggled with major injury problems and only played 22 league games because he was sidelined several times due to a torn muscle fiber and a meniscus .

Castro also completed an apprenticeship as a sports and fitness clerk at Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Borussia Dortmund

For the 2015/16 season, Castro moved to Borussia Dortmund after ten years as a professional at Bayer 04 Leverkusen with a release clause . The transfer fee was estimated by the media at 11 million euros . He received a four-year contract until June 30, 2019. In his first season for BVB, he played 41 competitive games, including 25 Bundesliga games with 3 goals scored and 7 assists. In the following season 2016/17 he came up with a similar record. On March 15, 2017, Castro extended his contract with BVB prematurely by another year until June 30, 2020. In the 2017/18 season, initially a regular under coach Peter Bosz , he only made seven in the second half of the season under his successor Peter Stöger Bundesliga games in action, not at all in the last six games.

VfB Stuttgart

For the 2018/19 season, Castro moved to VfB Stuttgart . He signed a contract until 2021. In his first season he finished third from last in the Bundesliga with VfB and lost the relegation against 1. FC Union Berlin . In the following second division season 2019/20 they succeeded in direct promotion .

National team

In his youth, Castro was invited to various courses by the Spanish Football Association , but did not play an international match for a Spanish junior team. Instead, when he was 18, he decided to play for the German Football Association in the future in the event of a nomination . He was then appointed to the German U-21 national team for three international test matches at the beginning of 2006 . In these Castro managed to earn a place in the German squad for the finals of the U-21 European Championship 2006 in Portugal , in which Germany was eliminated in the group stage.

On March 18, 2007 he was invited for the first time by Joachim Loew for the European Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic and for the friendly against Denmark in the German national team. On March 28, 2007 he made his debut in a 0-1 defeat in Duisburg against Denmark . Castro was in the senior squad for the last time in February 2008.

Castro was involved in winning the U-21 European Championship in Sweden in 2009 under national coach Horst Hrubesch . Castro scored the 1-0 in the 4-0 win in the final against England's U-21s .

Charity

Castro is involved in the youth campaign "iCHANCE - read better, write better!" By the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education and draws attention to the fact that more than seven million adults cannot read and write properly.
