Manuel Friedrich (born September 13, 1979 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a former German soccer player .

youth

Friedrich, who comes from Guldental near Bad Kreuznach , played in his youth for SG Guldental 07 and in 1995 switched as a midfielder to the B-Juniors of 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he jumped over the amateurs in the final phase of the 1999/2000 season succeeded in the central defense of the professional team.

1. FSV Mainz 05

In his first year as a professional, the inexperienced Friedrich showed deficits. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old played 27 second division games under coaches René Vandereycken , Eckhard Krautzun and Jürgen Klopp . Friedrich made his breakthrough in the 2001/02 season; with his neighbor Robert Nikolic he formed a safe right-wing defense. With eight goals this season, he was the most dangerous defender in the league.

Change to Werder Bremen

After the Mainz team missed promotion to the Bundesliga, Friedrich moved to Bundesliga club Werder Bremen for the 2002/03 season . Bremen assured him a regular place in central defense, but had to do without Friedrich for a year due to two cruciate ligament tears in the summer and winter preparations. After his recovery, in addition to 13 regional league games, he was given a seven-minute Bundesliga assignment with the future German champions .

Return to Mainz

During the winter break of 2003/04 , Friedrich initially moved back to Mainz on loan before he was bought from Bremen six months later. The amount of the transfer was not published, but should have been around 1.4 million euros. That would mean that Friedrich would have been by far the most expensive new addition to the Mainz team.

Friedrich was a constant high performer in Mainz. Until the winter break of 2005/06 he was absent only once due to a yellow card suspension and took over from goalkeeper Dimo Wache as the team captain of the 05er for the duration of the injury break . With a quota of 83% won duels, Friedrich finished the 2005/06 season in statistics as the strongest defender in the Bundesliga.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Friedrich moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen and initially signed a three-year contract. He described this step as "the hardest decision of my football career". For the 2008/09 season, Simon Rolfes was appointed as a new Werkself captain, and Friedrich as his deputy. He was a fixture in Bayer's central defense from the very beginning and always made at least 30 season appearances in the first three years.

In his second year he reached the final of the DFB Cup with the team , which they lost to Werder Bremen . Friedrich also went back to the 2010/11 season as a regular player. Also because of his defensive mistakes they lost the top game against autumn champions Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the second half of the season (18th matchday; 1: 3) by conceding three goals in a short time. Friedrich then got a break. When he was set up again from the start seven game days later, the game and the rest of the season were over for him after a quarter of an hour with a broken shoulder. In the end, Bayer claimed second place in the table and became runner-up.

His contract ended at the end of the 2012/13 season . Friedrich left the club to end his career in Asia , as he “was hardly used this season at the latest”. However, such a commitment did not materialize, so that he kept fit with the regional division Rot-Weiß Oberhausen while he hoped for a commitment from a club.

Borussia Dortmund

After injuries to central defenders Mats Hummels and Neven Subotić , Friedrich was signed by Borussia Dortmund on November 20, 2013 until the end of the 2013/14 season . Three days later, he made his debut in the 3-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich . He scored his only goal for Borussia Dortmund on February 8, 2014 in a 5-1 away win against his former club Werder Bremen . Friedrich played for BVB in a total of 15 competitive games in the 2014/15 season.

Mumbai City FC

In August 2014, Mumbai City FC from India signed him for the newly founded Indian Super League . Friedrich, who wanted to end his career in India, was the first German football player to make his debut on October 12, 2014 (1st matchday) in the 3-0 defeat in the away game against Atlético de Kolkata in the starting line-up. He scored his first goal on December 7, 2014 (13th matchday) with the 2-1 winner in the home game against Atlético de Kolkata in the 76th minute. When his contract ended in January 2015, he ended his career as an active footballer.

National team

His strong performances since his promotion to the Bundesliga with Mainz 05 in 2004 also made those responsible for the national team aware of the defender. For the international match against the United States in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup , Friedrich, who had already played several games with the team in 2006 , was the first player in the club's history to be nominated for the senior national team without being used.

When the last free place in the squad for the 2006 World Cup was awarded, the Leverkusen veteran Jens Nowotny was preferred to Friedrich - the Mainzer's fitness values were too bad. This personnel decision was one of the most controversial in the run-up to the World Cup, but was put into perspective when Friedrich was diagnosed with a mild case of Pfeiffer's glandular fever shortly after the tournament .

In the international test match against Sweden's selection on August 16, 2006, Friedrich made his debut in the DFB team. He scored his first goal for the national team in his third appearance, the qualifying game for the Euro 2008 on September 6, 2006 against the San Marino selection (13-0). Until 2008 he was called up ten times, including four times in the European Championship qualification, but could not establish himself permanently in the German team.
