history

The company's history goes back to 1920, when Alois Ehrmann senior, a dairy master, went into business for himself and founded a “one-man dairy”. In 1929 he bought a dairy.

In 1960 he handed over the management of the company to his two sons Anton and Alois jun. and made them equal partners. Alois Ehrmann (junior) was given responsibility for the dairy in Oberschönegg, while Anton Ehrmann took over the marketing of the products and the development of national sales at the Leonberg site near Stuttgart.

The company's best-known brand - “Almighurt” fruit yoghurt - was introduced in 1964. In 1989 the company acquired the Fleischwerke E. Zimmermann GmbH & Co. KG ( Thannhausen ), in 1992 the Hainichen-Freiberg dairy (50% joint venture with the Champignon Hofmeister cheese dairy ), and in 1998 a majority stake in the JM Gabler-Saliter dairy ( Obergünzburg ; coffee cream, condensed milk).

In 2000, a production facility was opened near Moscow in order to open up the Russian and from there also the Chinese market. Ehrmann has been represented in Russia with its own subsidiary since 2000. The Russian subsidiary achieved a turnover of 150 million euros in 2007 with an export quota of 20%. Together with the US company Commonwealth Dairy, Ehrmann built a dairy in Brattleboro , Vermont, which went into operation in 2011, and another in Casa Grande , Arizona in 2013 .

Ehrmann has been supporting the first division basketball team Ratiopharm Ulm since 2012 .

criticism

In 2014, the company came under public criticism after it had advertised a children's quark with the slogan “As important as the daily glass of milk”.

The Central Office for Combating Unfair Competition had sued the Federal Court of Justice against this claim . The judges passed the case on to the European Court of Justice because they had doubts as to whether Ehrmann could transfer the positive image of milk to the fruit quark. This contains three times as much sugar as normal cow's milk.

In April 2014, the ECJ gave the Federal Court of Justice an aid to interpretation; On February 12, 2015, the latter decided that the advertising in the form complained of was fundamentally legal. The BGH also decided that the slogan was a health-related statement in accordance with the EU regulation on health claims , which should have been explained in more detail on the packaging. To clarify which information is to be given in detail, this question was referred back to the OLG. The BGH decision has no practical effects, as Ehrmann's slogan is no longer used.

In 2015, the Lebensmittel-Zeitung awarded the company a Golden Sugar Loaf .
