Career start in Uruguay and Argentina

Sebastián "Seba" Fernández, who also has a Spanish passport, started playing football at the age of six at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club , where he eventually played in the Liga Universitaria. The defining coach of the first phase of his football development was Mario Lanza. His professional football career began after joining Miramar Misiones in 2003 , when he was appointed to the reserve team by Juan Diego Tchadkijian in 2004. There he made his debut in the Uruguayan first division. After twenty games with seven goals in the preseason, he also came to Apertura and Clausura in the 2005/06 season to 31 missions (six goals) in the Primera División . 30 games with nine goals at Miramar Misiones in the 2006/07 season indicate his standing in the team he left the following season in January 2007 for Defensor Sporting Club . With Defensor he was able to win the Uruguayan championship title in the 2007/08 season and took part in both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana . In each of the two international competitions he was used seven times (no goal), while in the Primera División, including the two championship finals, he played 34 first division matches (15 goals) and played in seven Liguilla games (no goal) in the Primera División. From there he moved in August 2008 on loan for a year with a subsequent purchase option to the Argentine club Banfield , where he was involved in winning the Torneo Apertura in 2009 and came 61 times in the league to the train (twelve goals). In the Copa Libertadores there are eight more games (three goals) for him.

Change to Europe

On August 5, 2010, he signed a four-year contract with Málaga CF. The transfer fee of 3.6 million euros was the Spanish club's highest to date. By the end of the 2012/13 season, he was there in 79 league games (twelve goals). 12 Copa del Rey games (two goals) and four Champions League matches (one goal) have also been recorded for him with the Spaniards. On August 29, 2013 it was announced that Fernandéz had terminated his contract with Málaga and would continue his career with Rayo Vallecano . So far, he has completed two other short assignments in the season that has just started under Málaga's new coach Bernd Schuster . He made his debut at Rayo Vallecano on August 30, 2013, when he was substituted on in the game against UD Levante in the 71st minute of the game. In the game against FC Valencia on September 28, 2013, he was replaced after suffering a rupture of the posterior cruciate ligament and the outer meniscus in his right knee, whereupon a six-month injury break was forecast. After a long break, he did not return to the league until mid-April 2014. Until his last league game for Rayo Vallecano on May 18, 2014, he played nine top division games (one goal). He then moved back to Uruguay to Nacional Montevideo for the 2014/15 season . There he made his debut on the 1st match day of Apertura 2014 for the "Bolsos" in the Primera División and scored a goal in his first game. In the 2014/15 season he played in 22 top division games, scored four goals and won the Uruguayan championship with the Montevideans. He also played two games (no goal) in the 2015 Copa Libertadores . During the 2015/16 season, Fernández scored eight times in 25 league appearances and played three games (no goal) in the Copa Sudamericana 2015 and eight games (one goal) in the Copa Libertadores 2016 . In the 2016 season he contributed six goals in 14 first division games to winning the national championship again.

National team

The striker is also a member of the Uruguayan national team . He made his debut in the Celeste in a 2-0 win in the friendly international match against Romania on May 23, 2006. He came on in the 86th minute for Fabián Estoyanoff . He was appointed by national coach Óscar Tabárez to his home country's squad for the 2010 World Cup . There he was used as a substitute both in the group game against South Africa and in the semi-finals against the Netherlands. For the Copa América 2011 he was initially appointed to the provisional squad , but was ultimately removed from the squad by Tabárez for the tournament. In total, he completed 14 international matches for Uruguay, in which he scored two goals, up to his last appearance on August 15, 2012, when he came on in the 89th minute in the friendly game against France.
