John Mensah (born November 29, 1982 in Obuasi ) is a Ghanaian football player .
Defender John Mensah, like so many young players, came to Italy as a teenager to become a professional footballer and played for a youth club in Bologna from 1999 to 2000 . He received his first contract in 2001 in Switzerland with AC Bellinzona , where he only played eight games and moved to CFC Genoa after the season . Other stations in Italy were Chievo Verona , FC Modena and US Cremonese . From January 2006 he played in France at Stade Rennes .
For the 2008/09 season, Mensah moved to French champions Olympique Lyon for a transfer fee of 8.4 million euros . There he received a contract until 2013 and wore the shirt number 12. Since he could not secure a regular place in the further course, he was awarded to the English first division club Sunderland in August 2009 .
Due to a lack of chances of a regular place at Lyon, Mensah was loaned out to Sunderland for another season. This time, however, a purchase option was written in the loan agreement, which automatically comes into force after 25 games for the Premier League club. After he returned to Lyon in the summer of 2011, a long-lasting injury put him out of action so that he could hardly be used in the following season. In the summer of 2012, he ended his contract in France and returned to his homeland. There he is under contract with Accra Hearts of Oak .
John Mensah has been a national player for Ghana since 2001 . He took part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and was part of the Ghana squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .
