Daniel Miguel Alves Gomes , stage name Danny (born August 7, 1983 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Portuguese football player .
Life
Danny was born a Venezuelan of Portuguese descent. In 1999, at the age of 15, he came to the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira to play for the youth and reserve team of Marítimo Funchal . Towards the end of the 2001/02 season he made his debut in the Primeira Divisão , the top Portuguese division at the time , and immediately celebrated his breakthrough when he was able to score five goals in just ten games. After the season he moved to Sporting Lisbon , but could not prevail at the then reigning Portuguese champions and was therefore awarded back to Marítimo after six months with only three appearances at the turn of 2003/04 for the rest of the season. When he could not play in the first half of the 2004/05 season, he moved to Russia at Dynamo Moscow at the turn of the year 2004/05 . At Dynamo he quickly became one of the top performers; he was named one of the three best right-wing attacking players of the 2007 season by the Russian Football Association and was included in the list of the best 33 players in the Premier League of the year. On August 25, 2008, Danny moved to Zenit St. Petersburg. Dynamo Moscow received the record transfer sum of 30 million euros for the move.
National team
Danny played for both the U-21s and Portugal's Olympic teams. He and the team achieved third place at the U-21 European Championship in 2004 , which also meant qualifying for the Olympic football tournament a few weeks later, in which he also took part. Danny played a major role in the 3-2 victory over Sweden in the tournament: the two field goals were prepared by his crosses, the penalty kick to make it 1-1 was awarded to Portugal after a foul caused on him.
On August 20, 2008, he made his international debut for the Portuguese senior team in a friendly against the Faroe Islands .
