Walter Gargano , full name Walter Alejandro Gargano Guevara , (born July 23, 1984 in Paysandú ) is a Uruguayan football player .

Career

Walter Gargano, called "Mota", comes from a football-loving family. His father, also bearing the first name Walter, was active as a football player at Paysandú Rampla Juniors , where his brother Tadeo also played. Walter Gargano began playing football at the age of three at the now defunct club La Centella in Paysandú. The team competed in the Liga de Baby Fútbol del Puerto de Paysandú . He later played for the clubs San Miguel and Independencia. In his youth he was already used in midfield. During a game of the Departamento selection against Danubio, the then junior player was discovered by coach Rafael Perrone . Soon after, Gargano's path led to Montevideo. There he went through all the youth teams of Danubio FC and finally made his debut at the age of 19 with the men's team in the Primera División . Under the direction of his coach Gerardo Pelusso there , he won the Uruguayan Championship right at the start of his career in 2004 . Danubio also took part in the Copa Libertadores . In the 2006/07 season, Danubio again won the Torneo Apertura 2006 as well as the Torneo Clausura 2007 and thus secured the national championship title in that season. Overall, Garganos completed, according to information on its own website, between 2004 and 2007, 114 games for Danubio, in which he scored three goals. In external sources, 83 appearances as league appearances with three goals scored are listed for the period 2003 to 2007. He was always in the starting lineup of his team.

On July 24, 2007, the Uruguayan midfielder, who also has an Italian passport, moved to the traditional Italian club SSC Napoli , where he signed a five-year contract until 2012.

He made his debut for SSC Napoli on August 15, 2007 in the first round of the Italian Cup against AC Cesena . He made his Serie A debut on August 26, 2007 in Naples in the match against Cagliari Calcio . On October 20, 2007 he scored his first goal for the southern Italians against AS Roma (4: 4) in the Olympic Stadium .

In March 2010, he extended his contract in Naples prematurely and signed until 2015. In the 2011/12 season Gargano won the Italian Cup with Naples, although he was not in the final.

On August 23, 2012 it was announced that Gargano will be loaned to Inter Milan . The Milanese are also given the option of permanent commitment. In his first season with the Milanese, he completed 28 games in Serie A and was used seven times in the Europa League .

On September 1, 2013 Gargano was loaned to FC Parma . There he made his debut on September 16, 2013 in the game against AS Roma . Until his last appearance on May 4, 2014, he played 21 games in the 2013/14 season and the first eleven minutes of the game on the 22nd matchday against AS, which was canceled on February 2, 2014 and made up on April 2, 2014 without his participation Rome for Parma in Serie A and scored a goal. For the 2014/15 season he returned to SSC Napoli. There he played 24 times (no goal) in Serie A that season. He also played in two games (no goal) in the Champions League qualification and six matches (no goal) in the 2014/15 Europa League . His club finished the season in fifth place and reached the semi-finals in the Europa League and in the Coppa Italia . Beginning in July 2015, he moved to Mexico to Monterrey . The transfer fee is said to have been $ 1.5 million. With the Mexicans he has so far (as of July 23, 2017) completed 64 first division games (no goal), twelve games (no goal) of the Copa México and three matches (no goal) of the CONCACAF Champions League . On July 24th, 2017, his move to Club Atlético Peñarol was officially announced.

National team

Walter Gargano made his debut for the Uruguayan national team on May 30, 2006 in a friendly against Libya . He took part in the 2007 Copa America , where he finished fourth with Uruguay and qualified with the team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . For this tournament he was then appointed by Óscar Tabárez to the squad of Uruguay . At the World Cup, Gargano reached fourth place with Uruguay, where he was used three times. In 2011 Gargano won the Copa América with his national team , and he was twice on the pitch. He also participated in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again part of the Uruguayan squad.

So far, he has completed 64 international matches in which he scored one goal. His last assignment for the time being is dated June 14, 2014.

Gargano is in a relationship with Michaela Hamšík, the sister of his former teammate Marek Hamšík . The two have a son together.
