Career

society

Mostly known as Maxi Pereira, the Uruguayan has three brothers and two sisters. He was 14 years old when his father succumbed to a heart attack and his mother now had to support the family on her own. Pereira therefore contributed to the family's livelihood at an early age by painting and selling in a toto kiosk. Pereira started playing football at the age of six in baby fútbol at Bella Vista . From there he moved to Defensor in the Octava División . The "El Mono" or "Monito" called Pereira made his debut there in 2002 in the Primera División and, having previously been a substitute player, was part of the team for the first time in the 2003 Clausura. At Defensor, he is said to have played 119 games by 2007, in which he scored 25 goals. He then moved in 2007 for a transfer fee of three million euros to the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon coached by José Antonio Camacho . The Portuguese acquired 70% of the transfer rights to the player. 30% of these rights initially remained with his previous club Defensor, but were also acquired by Benfica at a later date. For the seasons 2007/08 to 2012/13 155 appearances and eight goals are shown for him. With the Portuguese he played in the right midfield until 2008. For the 2008/09 season, right-back Nélson Marcos moved to Betis Sevilla , so that Maxi could take his post in the regular team.

In the 2013/14 season he played in 25 league games. He didn't score a goal. He also played in four games in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League, seven times in the Europa League and five times in the Taça de Portugal 2013/14 and twice in the Copa de la Liga . He won the Portuguese Championship with his club that season and advanced with the team to the final of the 2013/14 Europa League . There they lost to FC Sevilla . In the 2014/15 season he was used 32 times in the Primeira Liga and scored five goals. Benfica won the national championship again. In the Champions League, Pereira played five games (no goal) that season. On July 15, 2015, his move to FC Porto was announced. He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. In the 2015/16 season he was there 32 times (one goal) in the league, three times in the national cup competition, six times (no goal) in the Champions League and once (no goal) in the Europa League. During the following season he played in 24 first division matches (two goals), seven Champions League games (no goal), twice in the league cup and once in the Taça de Portugal (each no goal).

National team

Maxi Pereira was part of the Uruguayan U-17 team coached by Juan Jacinto Rodríguez , which took part in the 2001 U-17 South American Championship in Peru and finished in 6th place. He played his first international A match against Mexico on October 26, 2005 , but it was lost. Under Uruguay's new national coach Óscar Tabárez , Pereira developed into a regular player, was called up for several friendlies in 2006 and took part in the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela, where Uruguay finished fourth, and he played four times from the start. In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he played 15 of the total of 20 qualifying games, the remaining five, such as the playoff first leg against Costa Rica, he missed due to injuries or suspensions. At the World Cup finals, Maxi Pereira reached the semi-finals with Uruguay for the first time since 1970. Previously, in the quarter-finals against Ghana, Pereira was the team's only mistake on penalties when he shot the ball over the goal. Thanks to Fernando Muslera , who saved two penalties from Ghana, his team got through anyway. Until the elimination of his team in the semifinals of the tournament against the Netherlands, in which he scored his first international goal with a 2: 3 shortly before the end, he was in the starting line-up in all matches. Pereira won the 2011 Copa América with Celeste the following year . He participated in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again part of the Uruguayan squad and was used three times during the tournament, reached the round of 16 with the team and was eliminated there by Colombia. In the first World Cup group game against Costa Rica , he received the red card. He was also nominated for the Copa América 2015 . There he was eliminated with the team in the quarterfinals. At the Copa América Centenario 2016 he was also part of the Uruguayan squad.

On June 5, 2016, he completed his 112th international match in the 3-1 defeat against Mexico and together with Diego Forlán (112 internationals) became Uruguay's record national team. Four days later he played his 113th international match and has been the sole record holder ever since. He expanded the record to 125 international matches by June 7, 2018. Although he was nominated for the World Cup in Russia , he was not used there or after. On March 25, 2019, Diego Godín surpassed Pereira's record with his 126th international match.
