Darío Anastacio Verón Maldonado (born July 26, 1979 in San Ignacio ) is a Paraguayan football player .
Career
Nicknamed Hechicero , Verón began his professional career in 1999 at Club 12 de Octubre and was part of the team that won the first Paraguayan national championship in club history in 2002, five years after promotion to the first division. Here Verón scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute in the decider against Guaraní. The following year he was signed by the Chilean club Cobreloa Calama with whom he also won the championship.
After moving to the Mexican club UNAM Pumas , he won the Clausura tournament in 2004 and won the first title in 14 years, which was followed by the Apertura championship in the second half of the year. Five years later, the strong leader and with a good positional play in the penalty area, Verón made his contribution to the next title win, the Clausura championship in 2009.
In the national team of Paraguay Darío Verón made his debut on January 27, 2001 in the game against South Korea. For the Copa América he was nominated for the first time in 2001, but was not used. Also in 2004 he was in the squad, but was again not used by national coach Aníbal Ruiz . He became a regular player in the national team with the qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup , in which he was used in eleven of 18 games. At the World Cup finals in South Africa, Paraguay made it to the quarter-finals, with Verón not coming to a game during the entire tournament.
