Art Advisory Board of the German Bundestag

The Art Council of the German Bundestag is an existing advisory board since 1995, of the President of the Bundestag in matters of promotion of the visual arts, in his powerful domestic authority subordinate Reichstag building and other possibly resulting ad hoc advice tasks. The forerunner organization of the Art Advisory Board was the Art Commission founded in 1979 by Annemarie Renger , which was merged into the Art Advisory Board in 1995. Purchase meetings at which it is decided which works of art are to be acquired for the art collection of the German Bundestag. These meetings take place at least once a year. The Art Advisory Board sees a second task in the development of an art-in-building concept for the parliament buildings in Berlin. Another task is the selection of the works of art or the artist in the exhibitions for contemporary art in the art room of the German Bundestag in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus .

The fourth task area of ​​the Art Advisory Board is the performance of ad hoc tasks. In the past, this included the art competitions for a memorial in the Berlin Reichstag building and for the Reichstag members of the Weimar Republic who were persecuted or murdered by the National Socialists .

Composition of the Art Advisory Board

In addition to the President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, the Art Advisory Board includes eight members of the German Bundestag. The secretary and curator of the art collection of the German Bundestag is Andreas Kaernbach. The current composition of the Art Advisory Board is as follows:

Other advising personalities

During the time of the German Bundestag in Bonn, it was the architect of Tall Eugen Egon Eiermann who had the conference rooms of the new House of Representatives designed by various artists. The MP Gustav Stein , who was also an art professor, suggested buying works of art from the Stein Collection for the MPs' offices. These works of art still form the basis of the German Bundestag's art collection today.

In 1976 Annemarie Renger considered purchasing additional works of art. For this reason, the Art Commission was founded, in which two members of the large parliamentary groups and one of the small parliamentary groups were appointed. Rita Süssmuth , who later became President of the Bundestag, was involved in the Art Commission during her time as President of the Bundestag. In 1995 the art commission was absorbed into the art advisory board.

Götz Adriani and Karin Stempel advised the art advisory board on the development of the art concept for today's Reichstag building .
