Götz Adriani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Götz Adriani (born November 21, 1940 in Stuttgart ) is a German art historian. From 1971 to 2005 he was director of the Kunsthalle Tübingen and from 2003 to 2017 board member of the foundation of the same name.

biography

Götz Adriani was born on November 21, 1940 in Stuttgart. After graduating from high school, Adriani studied art history , archeology and history in Tübingen , Munich and Vienna . In 1964 he received his doctorate on the subject of the medieval preaching place and its design .

In 1965 he did an internship at the State Gallery in Stuttgart . In 1966 Adriani moved to the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt. There he was responsible for the painting department as well as for the Karl Ströher collection ranging from Joseph Beuys to American Pop Art . Thanks to the latter, contacts were established with well-known German and American artists - Beuys and Warhol , Rauschenberg , Oldenburg , Lichtenstein and Segal , Stella , de Maria , Flavin , Baselitz , Palermo , Polke , Richter and Walther .

In the spring of 1971, Götz Adriani followed a call placed by Georg Karl Pfahler as founding director of the Kunsthalle Tübingen, a foundation run by Paula Zundel and Margarete Fischer-Bosch , the daughters of Robert Bosch , in memory of the painter Georg Friedrich Zundel . With presentations by artists of classical modernism and the present, whose works had not yet been shown in German-speaking countries or had hardly established themselves as artistic positions, Adriani succeeded in realizing exhibition programs of supraregional status in Tübingen. Under his leadership, the Kunsthalle became an important meeting place for contemporary art and the avant-garde, especially in the first decade of its existence. Among other things, the first retrospectives and previously unknown groups of works by the following artists were on view here:

Another important exhibition series by Adrianis was dedicated to the predominantly French pioneers and protagonists of modernism. With a few exceptions, these scientifically developed retrospectives had their German premieres in the Kunsthalle Tübingen:

  • 1976: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , The graphic work (also 2002).
  • 1978: Paul Cézanne , The graphic work.
  • 1981: Alberto Giacometti .
  • 1982: Paul Cézanne , watercolors.
  • 1984: Edgar Degas ; Pastel oil sketches drawings.
  • 1986: Pablo Picasso , pastels, drawings, watercolors; Ingres and Delacroix, drawings and watercolors.
  • 1986/87: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, paintings and picture studies.
  • 1993: Cézanne, painting.
  • 1995: Edgar Degas, portraits.
  • 1996: Auguste Renoir , painting.
  • 2001: Henri Rousseau , Der Zöllner, Border Crosser to Modernity.
  • 2002: Pablo Picasso , figure and portrait.
  • 2005: Brothel and boudoir, scenes of modernity, Cézanne Degas Toulouse-Lautrec Picasso.

With regard to the public response, these exhibitions achieved visitor records even in international comparison. In the 1980s and 90s, for example, the number of visitors reached well over two hundred, even over three hundred thousand. The selection of 97 paintings by Cézanne, which is one of the largest and most important exhibitions of the artist's work, was particularly successful in 1993. Over 430,000 visitors came to the Kunsthalle during the 15 week period and around 250,000 catalog books were sold - a catalog edition that is still unique in the world today. In 1996, the 104 paintings in the first Renoir exhibition in German-speaking countries again attracted over 420,000 visitors. Götz Adriani had an exhibition budget of only 40,000 euros a year at his disposal for his projects - including the catalog publications, which were distinguished by their carefully researched content and high-quality equipment.

Due to the surplus generated by the Kunsthalle and a donation from Georg Zundel , the son of the founder, whose collection of works on paper from the 1960s and 70s Götz Adriani put together, the municipal institution was converted into a foundation under civil law in the summer of 2003. This secured the financial basis for the continued existence of the house.

Offers to take over the management of the Folkwang Museum in Essen, the Stuttgart State Gallery, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection in Düsseldorf, the newly created position of General Director of the Frankfurt Museums and, last but not least, the General Directorate of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich he suggested. In addition to his work in Tübingen, he was also active for other institutions. He was the German commissioner of the Biennale in São Paulo three times, and for a long time he has been active both on the Presidium of the Institute for Foreign Relations in Stuttgart and on the Board of Trustees of the ZF Friedrichshafen Cultural Foundation. In 1985 he was appointed honorary professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, and from 1999 to 2004 Götz Adriani was also the founding director of the Museum of New Art at the Karlsruhe ZKM, where, in addition to the establishment and expansion of the so-called collector's museum, he was responsible for a total of 16 exhibition projects - about Bruce Nauman , Franz West , Tobias Rehberger or Martin Kippenberger - initiated and realized. From 1994 to 1999 he advised the Bundestag Art Advisory Council on furnishing the Berlin Reichstag building with works of art and, since 2001, has been supporting Frieder Burda in the construction, operation and programming of his museum in Baden-Baden. As a member of the board of the Frieder Burda Foundation, Adriani organized extensive exhibitions on Sigmar Polke , Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz, among other things .

In 2005 Götz Adriani withdrew from the operative business of the Kunsthalle Tübingen. In 2011/2012 the Kunsthalle celebrated its 40th anniversary with a two-part anniversary show, commemorating Adriani's exhibition initiatives.

Honors

Adriani has received numerous prizes and awards for his cultural commitment, including the prize of the Theo Wormland Foundation in Munich. In the same year he was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques . At the end of the 1990s, Adriani received the Württembergische Hypothekenbank's foundation prize for art and science and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . He received the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg , the Order of the French Legion of Honor , the First Class Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the right of honorary citizenship of the university city of Tübingen .
