from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frieder Burda (born April 29, 1936 in Gengenbach ; † July 14, 2019 in Baden-Baden ) was a German art collector , founder of the Frieder Burda Museum and an honorary citizen of Baden-Baden .

Life

Frieder Burda was the second son of the publisher Franz Burda and his wife Aenne Burda . He grew up in Offenburg with his older brother Franz and younger brother Hubert . After finishing school in Offenburg, Triberg and Switzerland , he completed an apprenticeship as a printer and a publisher. He was trained in business in his father's company. This was followed by a longer stay in France , where Frieder Burda worked for a magazine publisher. He then spent several years in England and the USA before taking over the Ullstein printing company GC Klebe in Darmstadt from Axel Springer in 1960 . He developed this company into one of the leading commercial print shops in Europe .

In 1971, senior Franz Burda transferred 24.5 percent of the shares in Burda GmbH to him and his brother Hubert . In 1973 Burda moved to the magazine publisher's headquarters in Offenburg and was appointed managing director of Burda GmbH together with his brother . In the following years he worked in various areas of the printing and publishing empire. In 1974 he was appointed "Chief of Finance and Administration" by his father; Shareholdings - such as 26 percent in Axel Springer Verlag until 1988 - also fell into his area of responsibility.

After the death of his father in 1986, he and his brother Franz inherited an extensive investment package, while his brother Hubert took over the entire printing and publishing area. From 1988 he was with Hubert Burda, with a stake of 45 percent, the largest shareholder in German Wings . By Manager Magazin Frieder Burda's wealth in 2018 was estimated at around 1 billion euros.

Art collection

Frieder Burda found his life's work in art. At the age of 32, he bought a picture by the contemporary painter Lucio Fontana at the 4th documenta in 1968 for around 3500 marks, thus laying the foundation for a top-class art collection. In this way, on the one hand, he continued a tradition of his father, who had collected works by important expressionist painters, on the other hand, Burda tried to differentiate himself from his father by turning to contemporary painting.

Burda has been collecting the works of Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke intensively and systematically since the mid-1980s . The collection contains exhibits from all phases of life. They provide an almost complete insight into the work and development of the work of the two artists who have decisively shaped contemporary art . With a view to these artists in particular, the “ Frieder Burda Collection ” is internationally regarded as one of the most important and high-quality private collections. In 2016, artnet ranked Burda among the 10 most important German collectors.

In 2002 the collection comprised almost 500 works of modern and contemporary art. When he started collecting, Burda often spontaneously and impulsively decided to buy a work. Later the collection grew organically, systematically and consistently - always under his high personal commitment. Expressionist tendencies form the core of the collection . In doing so, she concentrates on a manageable number of artists who have been collected with determination and of whom extensive work complexes are available. German Expressionism with works by Max Beckmann , Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Wilhelm Lehmbruck and August Macke marks the starting point of the collection.

This is followed by a complex of works from the long controversial late work of Pablo Picasso with expressive depictions of the human figure, which is unique in Germany . American abstract expressionism with groups of works by Jackson Pollock , Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko is another focus of the collection. The selection of images makes it possible to understand the development of the artists from figurative compositions to generously abstract gestures and color fields.

The collection documents the German art of the second post-war generation, the contemporaries of Frieder Burda, particularly comprehensively. Georg Baselitz is very well represented. The collection contains two main works by his partner and friend from the 1960s, Eugen Schönebeck , of whom only 40 works have survived. Burda also collected works by the Austrian artist Arnulf Rainer intensively.

The "Frieder Burda Foundation" was established in 1998 to preserve the collection and make it accessible to the public. This financed the new "Frieder Burda Collection" building in Baden-Baden and also fully covers its running costs. The purpose of the foundation is to promote art, culture and science. This claim is primarily realized through the Museum of Modern Art, in which the founder's art collection was made accessible to the public. The only benefactor was Frieder Burda.

The New York architect Richard Meier , who implemented the 20 million euro project by autumn 2004, was commissioned with the construction . In October 2004, Burda opened the museum in Baden-Badener Lichtentaler Allee . At the end of 2016, Frieder Burda announced that he would be relinquishing the Board of Directors.
