The Lichtentaler Allee is a 2.3 kilometer long street through a park area in downtown Baden-Baden . It became known in the 19th century as the promenade for famous visitors to the glamorous spa town, which was then known as the “summer capital of Europe”.

overview

The avenue leads from Goetheplatz on the left bank of the Oos upstream to Klosterplatz in the Lichtental district . According to a legend that has been handed down in writing since the early 19th century, the original corridor path from Lichtenthal Abbey to the municipal market is said to have been laid out in 1655 as an oak avenue by the Baden chamberlain, Moritz von Lassolaye. Between 1850 and 1870 it was redesigned into a large landscape park at the instigation of the casino leaseholder Bénazet . Over 300 different native and exotic trees and plants, such as lime trees , chestnuts , oaks , plane trees , alders , ginkgo trees , silver maples , magnolias and azaleas , line the path. The park is surrounded by elegant villas and luxury hotels. Several ornate, wrought-iron footbridges cross the Oos.

The road is only accessible to a limited extent for motor vehicle traffic and is accompanied by additional footpaths over long distances. There are horse carriage rides offered along the avenue. Part of the avenue has been a bicycle street since April 2018 .

The non-profit association Freundeskreis Lichtentaler Allee supports the Baden-Baden Garden Authority in designing the park and in 2013 provided a free audio guide for the park that can be downloaded from information boards with a QR code .

course

Starting at Goetheplatz, the first thing to come is the theater built in the neo-baroque style . A few meters further follows the LA8 cultural center with the chess center and the Museum of Art and Technology of the 19th Century , the former headquarters of the International Club , and then the State Art Hall built on a small hill . Opposite the art gallery and the Museum Frieder Burda next to it , a bridge leads over the Oos to Augustaplatz. Another bridge leads to the congress center. A little further on the other side of the river lies the world-famous Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa in its own park . Then you have to cross Bertholdstrasse, you are now directly between the back of the Bertholdbad and the site of the former small golf course.

Then you reach the tennis courts and continue to the Josephinenbrücke, which connects to the patronage facility . The next bridge leads directly to Ludwig-Wilhelm-Straße and another private bridge to the Parkresidenz Bellevue, another former luxury hotel. Contemporary art can be admired in the park of Villa Schriever on the right. At the Chain Bridge, leave the road connecting the Gunzenbach valley behind you, take a look at the shepherd's house and the adjoining monastery meadow, and then see the rear of the Palais Biron.

Further on you reach the dahlia garden, at the end of which the Bénazet'sche garden pavilion is set up. In this area there are busts of Clara Schumann , Johannes Brahms and Robert Stolz . The last notable building can be seen, again on the other side of the Oos, the former Hotel Bären. The end of the avenue is the monastery square.
