Audioguide (in German also "audio guide") is an artificial word made up of "audio" (Latin: "I hear") and "guide" (English: "Führer", meaning museum guide ). Audio guides are sound recordings that can be played on appropriate devices or mobile phones and were originally developed as electronic museum guides. But they are now also popular as city guides.

In terms of genre history, the audio guide can be assigned to the audio book , although it was developed independently of this and, in contrast to the traditional audio book, is often only rented out (and not sold). There are numerous versions of electronic museum guides. Another variant has come onto the market in recent years under the name “ Multimedia Guide ”: Internet offers and apps for smartphones and tablets are also being added.

A variant of the audio guide is the installation of signs at sights on which u. a. a phone number is applied. Tourists, especially tourists who decide spontaneously, can call the telephone number with their mobile phone and receive a detailed description of the sight in front of which they are currently standing.
