As early as 1977, the entrepreneur Theo Wormland (1907–1983) transferred several works from his collection to the Sprengel Museum. Theo Wormland Stiftung GmbH was founded in Munich in 1982, shortly before Theo Wormland's death, and was the parent company of the Wormland companies until 2015 . After the sale of the business activities to Ludwig Beck AG , the foundation promised in a press release that it would continue its patronage and social tasks. With financial support she made a significant contribution to the realization of the new building of the Pinakothek der Moderne . It also enabled extensive new acquisitions of the Modern Art Collection. These include masterpieces of surrealism , including works by Salvador Dalí , Max Ernst and René Magritte ; Theo Wormland brought in his collection.

The foundation also sponsors exhibitions, finances publications and awarded the Theo Wormland Art Prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, every two years between 1982 and 2001.

In 2013 the foundation attracted attention by donating the entrepreneur's private art collection to the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. The collection is one of the German Surrealism collections and was previously on permanent loan to the Pinakothek for 30 years.
