Karin Dorothea Stempel (* 1952 in Leuna ) is a German art historian .

Life

Karin Stempel studied art history, modern German literature and philosophy at the universities of Marburg, Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main from 1971 to 1976. On the basis of a work on The Theory of Picturesquen with William Gilpin , she was granted a research stay in London , where she stayed at the Courtauld Institute of Art , the Warburg Institute and the British Museum . She then continued her studies in Marburg and received her doctorate on the subject of "Fields of Remembrance - Gardens of Delight - Historical Images in the Early English Landscape Garden".

In 1980, Stempel became curator at the Landesmuseum Oldenburg and in 1982 director of the Mülheim an der Ruhr Municipal Museum. From 1994 she worked as a freelance art critic and curator, among other things as commissioner for the German contribution to the São Paulo biennials in 1996 and 1998. With Götz Adriani she developed the art concept for the former Reichstag building in Berlin.

From 2000 to 2010 Karin Stempel was rector and professor at the Kassel Art Academy . In this capacity she was the spokesperson for the rectors' conference of the German art academies.
