The Church of San Ignacio |
San Ignacio is a city and district in the Misiones department in Paraguay 225 km from Asunción . The city has about 19,100 inhabitants, the entire district has a population of 50,468. It is known as the capital of the Hispano-Guarani Baroque .
history
The place was founded on December 29, 1609 as "San Ignacio Guazú" by Jesuit priests . It was the first Jesuit mission in Paraguay. From here the preachers poured out to found other missions such as Santa Rosa, Santiago, Santa María, San Cosme y Damián or Encarnación. However, the Jesuits were expelled again in 1768. In 1966, eleven families of German-born Mennonites from Canada settled on 600 hectares of land near the town of San Ignacio in the Reinfeld colony , who practice agriculture. The colony had grown to 140 people in 1996.

It is mainly used for agriculture and animal husbandry. The main products are rice, soy and corn.
