In 2001 Rodríguez became world champion with the Argentine U20 national team. He made his senior national team debut on June 8, 2003 in a 4-1 win in Osaka against Japan when he came on for Solari in the 76th minute. After that, however, he was only used sporadically by national coach Marcelo Bielsa . His successor José Pekerman nominated him for the Confederations Cup 2005 , where he reached the final with Argentina.

He took part in the 2006 World Cup and scored three goals, including the goal of beating Mexico in the round of 16. Since he hit Bastian Schweinsteiger on the back with his fist after losing the quarter-final against Germany , FIFA banned him from two competitive games and a fine of 3,050 euros (5,000 francs) was imposed on him. He took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Argentina was eliminated in the quarter-finals. He also took part in the 2014 World Cup, where he was used in the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the semifinals against the Netherlands.
