John Paintsil (often incorrectly John Pantsil ; born June 15, 1981 in Berekum , Ghana ) is a former Ghanaian football player .

Career

In the club

Paintsil began his career at Berekum Arsenal , where he was under contract until 2000. In the 2000/01 season he then moved briefly to the Liberty Professionals . Then he played again for half a year for Berekum Arsenal and then went to Widzew Łódź . Paintsil only stayed in Poland for six months, however, and moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel in the summer of 2002 and to Hapoel Tel Aviv two years later . In the summer of 2006, in turn, he moved to the Premier League for West Ham United . Together with his teammate Bobby Zamora , Paintsil was transferred to city rivals Fulham FC in the summer of 2008 as a "total package" for around eight million euros . In the summer of 2011, it was announced that Paintsil was transferring to the English second division club Leicester City on a free transfer. A year later he moved on to Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel.

From 2013 he played in South Africa . First one season for Santos Cape Town and then two for Maritzburg United , where he ended his career in the summer of 2016.

In the national team

On December 5, 2001 Paintsil played his first international match for the Ghanaian national soccer team against Algeria .

Paintsil took part with the Ghanaian national soccer team in the 2004 Olympic Games, the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 African Cup .

In a game of the Ghanaian national team, he pulled an Israeli flag out of his pants after a goal and caused a stir.

In total, he played 89 games by 2013 in which he could not score.

As a trainer

In the 2016/17 season he was assistant coach of the South African first division club Kaizer Chiefs .

Titles and awards

Name spelling

Due to a typing error in the transfer documents prior to his move from Hapoel Tel Aviv to West Ham United, his last name was incorrectly given as “Pantsil”. Previous submissions to the English FA were unsuccessful. The only correct spelling of his name is John Paintsil.
