society

At the beginning of his career in Uruguay, the 1.88-meter-tall central defender Diego Lugano, called "Tota", was also in the ranks of Club Libertad. There he won the championship title. His next station was in professional football. He signed a contract with Nacional Montevideo . In 1999 he won the title of the Tercera División at the Bolsos with the youth team (Formativas). At least in the Clausura 2000 he was in the Montevidean team in the first division. In 2000 and 2001, according to the information on his own website, he was part of the team that won the Uruguayan national championship. He then played on loan in 2001 at Plaza Colonia in the Segunda División , where he played twelve second division games that year (no goal). After promotion to the Primera División , he was used there in the 2002 season in 35 first division games and scored four goals. This was followed by his return to Nacional, where he played in another five games (no goal) in the top Uruguayan league in 2003. In the same year he joined the Brazilian first division club São Paulo . He stayed there until 2006. During this period he had 95 games and eight goals.

With São Paulo FC he won the São Paulo State Cup , the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup in 2005 by defeating Liverpool FC in the final . In addition, Diego Lugano was named the best defender in South America at the end of 2005, and in addition to being named South American Footballer of the Year , he finished second behind Carlos Tévez .

After the final of the Copa Libertadores 2006 in August 2006, which the central defender narrowly lost with São Paulo, Fenerbahçe Istanbul finally signed him for a transfer fee of 7.5 million euros . You had been watching him for three years and was the long-awaited defender who was missing from the team. Diego Lugano signed a three-year contract with an option for another season. In his first season at Fenerbahçe SK he won the Turkish championship title (2007) and helped the team to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2007/08 season , losing to the eventual finalists Chelsea FC . On August 16, 2009, it was announced that the center-back had extended his contract with Fenerbahçe until 2013. It was not clear whether Diego would extend Lugano after letting the option expire for another year. The center-back in 2010 was a candidate in the UEFA to the Team of the Year to be selected.

Diego Lugano was looking for a new challenge and in August 2011 switched to the very ambitious French first division club Paris Saint-Germain with a three-year contract for a transfer fee of more than 2.92 million euros .

On January 23, 2013, Lugano moved on loan with no purchase option until the end of the season for the Spanish first division club Málaga . With the Spaniards he came to eleven season appearances in the league; Except for one game, he played all games as a member of the starting XI.

On August 2, 2013 Lugano's free transfer to the Premier League to West Bromwich Albion was announced. In England, however, he only made his debut on matchday 6 when he came on for Victor Anichebe in the 89th minute of the game against Manchester United . In the following period he was still not considered and only came on the 15th matchday in the 0-2 defeat against Norwich City for his second use, which also meant his starting eleven debut. In his fifth game of the season against Everton on January 20, 2014, he scored his first goal in the Premier League. In total, he completed nine league games and scored one goal until his last appearance on May 7, 2014. After the 2013/14 season, the contractual relationship between Lugano and the English club ended. Since he was injured during the World Cup, he did not find a new club in the transition period before the start of the 2014/15 season and has since been without a club. He said, however, that he did not want to end his career in the Uruguayan league and that his former club, São Paulo FC, would also be an option in Brazil. After several months without a club, he joined the Swedish first division club BK Häcken in March 2015 and signed a contract until June 4, 2015 with an extension option. He made his debut there in early April 2015 in the 1-1 home game of the second matchday against Djurgårdens IF in Allsvenskan . Overall, he ran eleven times (no goal) in the league for the Swedes. At the beginning of July 2015 he ended his engagement in Sweden. According to press reports, Al-Rayyan SC from Qatar or the Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño were initially up for discussion as possible new employers in Lugano . On July 11, 2015, he signed a contract with Cerro Porteño for two years. There he played 16 first division games and scored five goals. He finished the 2015 Clausura with his team level on points with Club Olimpia at the top of the table, but was defeated by them in the final round for the title. In January 2016, he moved again to his former club São Paulo. He signed a contract until the end of 2017. With the Brazilians he ran twelve times (no goal) in the Paulista A1, 18 times (two goals) in the Série A , twice (no goal) in the Copa do Brasil and four times (no goal ) in the Copa Libertadores 2016 .

In January 2018, Lugano declared its active football playing career over.

National team

Lugano made his debut for the Uruguayan national team on February 4, 2003 , but was not considered by the national coach for the 2004 Copa America in Peru and had to watch from home as Uruguay finished third in the tournament.

In November 2005, the center-back missed the Celeste scarce in the relegation matches the qualifications for the 2006 World Cup in a penalty shootout against Australia .

Since 2006 he was the team captain of Uruguay. With the national team, the central defender took part in the Copa America 2007 in Venezuela , where he missed the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the semifinals against Brazil and Diego Lugano saw a red card in the game for third place against Mexico . The game ended 3-1 for Mexico.

He was also in Uruguay's squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and reached the semi-finals with the team. A year later, Diego Lugano won the Celeste the Copa America in 2011 and became the sole record winner of the South American Championship .

In October 2011, on the first day of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he managed to score two goals in one game for the first time in a 4-2 win over Bolivia , and the central defender prepared another goal, so he was on three of four goals involved. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again a team captain in Uruguay's squad, but was already plagued by constant injuries and injured his knee again in the tournament.

After the World Cup, there were initially no further international appearances. However, Lugano has declared that it will still be available for the "Celeste".

Diego Lugano made 95 international appearances and scored nine goals for his home country. Lugano's ninth international goal in a 2-1 win against Nigeria on June 20, 2013 as part of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup was the 1,300th goal in Celeste's international history . It was last used on June 14, 2014.
