Cha Du-ri , known in German-speaking countries by the customary name sequence Du-Ri Cha (born July 25, 1980 in Frankfurt am Main , Germany ), is a former South Korean soccer player . Cha was originally an offensive player, but because of weaknesses in his qualifications, he was mainly used in defense since 2006.

Career

Cha was born in Frankfurt am Main as the son of the then Bundesliga professional Cha Bum-kun . He spent his childhood up to the age of nine in Germany, where he grew up in Frankfurt and later in Leverkusen and also began playing football. After his father's career ended, the family returned to South Korea in 1989 .

National team

Cha was playing soccer on the university team as a student at the renowned Korea University in Seoul, when the then Korean selection coach Guus Hiddink became aware of Cha's powerful and aggressive style of play in a test match between the Korean national team and the Korea University team. Cha made such a good impression on Hiddink that he was nominated as the only student and amateur in the host's squad for the World Cup finals in Korea and Japan . Cha made his international debut in November 2001 against Senegal. During the 2002 World Cup he was used in four games and reached fourth place with South Korea. He was not nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany by the Korean national coach Dick Advocaat , but only put on the list. Cha announced that he would resign from the national team after the international match against New Zealand's selection on March 31, 2015.

societies

After the 2002 World Cup, which went well for Korea, Du-ri Cha made the leap to Europe when he signed with the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where his father was already playing. Since those in charge at Bayer saw him as a perspective player who first needed match practice, he was immediately loaned to the Bundesliga club DSC Arminia Bielefeld. After Arminia's relegation, Cha was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt, his father's ex-club, in 2003, where he was promoted to the Bundesliga and was firmly committed in 2005.

After Cha was part of the permanent staff in the first two years at Frankfurt, he did not manage to permanently fight for a place in the first team of Eintracht in the 2005/06 season and usually did not get beyond the role of substitute player. This was also one of the reasons for his non-nomination by South Korea's national coach Dick Advocaat for the 2006 World Cup squad in Germany.

In 2006 he moved to league competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05 on a free transfer . For the 2007/08 season Cha signed with the then second division club TuS Koblenz . Cha played for Koblenz until the end of the 2008/09 season. In the two years at TuS he found his way back to his old strength and was a regular player. In June 2009 Cha signed a contract with SC Freiburg in order to have the opportunity to play in the 1st Bundesliga in the coming season. His only goal of the season for SCF came in a 1-0 away win against Schalke 04. At the end of the season, his contract was not extended by mutual agreement, as Cha wanted to return to Asia after the birth of his child.

However, this plan was rejected again and Cha signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow in Scotland. For the 2012/13 season he returned to the Bundesliga and joined the Bundesliga promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf for two years . On February 13, 2013, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement after he exceeded the special leave he had been granted. In March 2013 he moved to FC Seoul , where he received a contract until 2014. In October 2015, Cha ended his active professional career at FC Seoul.
