Fernando Llorente Torres [ ferˈnando ʎoˈɾente ˈtores ] (born February 26, 1985 in Pamplona ) is a Spanish football player . He is under contract with SSC Napoli .
Club career
Llorente, who was born in Pamplona, Navarre , and grew up in his parents' hometown, Rincón de Soto in La Rioja , began playing football in the youth of the local clubs FC Funes and CA River Ebro . At the age of twelve he moved to Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 1997 . With the Basques, he went through various youth teams until he was handed over to the farm team CD Baskonia in 2003 , for which he scored twelve goals in 33 games in the Tercera División 2003/04 season at the age of 18 .
The following season he was brought to the second team of Athletic, where he scored four goals in 16 appearances in the first half of the Segunda División B season. Therefore, at the beginning of 2004, his contract was extended to 2008. Shortly before his 20th birthday, he made his debut in the Primera División on January 16, 2005 in a 1-1 draw against Espanyol Barcelona . Three days later, he scored a hat trick in the Copa del Rey encounter against UD Lanzarote . He completed 14 more league games this season and was in the starting line-up nine times. In the 2005/06 season he was repeatedly thrown back from injuries, so that he only played ten league games from the start. Before the start of the 2006/07 season , Llorente extended his contract term to 2011. He started the season as the fourth striker behind Aritz Aduriz , Joseba Etxeberria and Ismael Urzaiz . As a result, he was only twice on the starting line-up this season and only scored two goals in 21 league appearances. Llorente made his final breakthrough in the 2007/08 season when he was the club's top scorer with eleven league goals. In the following season he scored 14 times in 34 league games and reached the cup final with Athletic Bilbao , which they lost to FC Barcelona . In the 2009/10 season he again scored 14 league goals in 37 games. He scored six goals in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League , making him the third best scorer in the competition. In the 2010/11 season he set a new career record with 18 goals in 38 league games. In the 2011/12 season he scored his 100th competitive goal for Athletic Bilbao on January 31, 2012 in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey . Overall, Llorente scored 17 times in 32 league games over the course of the season. With another five goals in the Copa del Rey and seven goals in the Europa League , Llorente scored 29 goals in 53 competitive games and reached the final with his club in both cup competitions.
At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Llorente turned down an offer to extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, whereupon various top European clubs expressed their interest in the Spaniard. Athletic Bilbao, however, insisted on fulfilling Llorente's contract; from then on he was only a substitute and substitute player and in the meantime fell out with coach Marcelo Bielsa . At the beginning of December 2012, Llorente reaffirmed that he did not want to extend his expiring contract. At the end of the season he left Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2013 after nine years and over 300 competitive games and joined the Italian first division club Juventus Turin on a free transfer .
On August 27, 2015, Llorente returned to the Primera División and joined Sevilla FC . After terminating his contract with Juventus Turin, he received a three-year contract with the reigning Europa League winners with a release clause of 20 million euros. He moved to Swansea City in Wales in August 2016 and signed a two-year contract. In late August 2017, he joined Tottenham Hotspur .
On September 2, 2019, he moved to SSC Napoli .
National team career
At the Junior World Cup in 2005 he reached the quarter-finals with the Spanish U-20 selection and was awarded the silver shoe at the end of the tournament as the second best goalscorer. Llorente made four scorers' lists in the group game against Chile (7-0) and scored a total of six goals, one less than top scorer Lionel Messi , who had played three more games.
On November 19, 2008, he played his first international match for the Spanish national team in a 3-0 win against Chile , in which he was substituted on in the 57th minute. Llorente scored his first international goal in the next game against England ; it was the goal to make it 2-0.
At the Confed Cup 2009 he was third with the national team. He played both in the group game and in the third place match against South Africa, where he scored the last goal to make it 2-0 in the first game mentioned.
In 2010 he was appointed as a supplementary player in the Spanish squad for the 2010 World Cup .
Llorente has been a regular member of the Basque football team since 2005, like some of his former Athletic teammates .
