Joseba Andoni Etxeberria Lizardi (born September 5, 1977 in Elgoíbar , Basque Country ) is a Spanish football player who last played at Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Primera División . He ended his career after the 2009/2010 season .
His main position was that of the right winger, but he could also be used in the central storm and in the midfield.
Career
Etxeberría started his career at Real Sociedad in 1993 . There he completed only seven games for the first team. He then moved to his current club, Athletic Bilbao, which became a very complicated transfer, and Athletic eventually paid € 3m for the midfielder. At that time, this sum was the highest for a transfer of a player under the age of 18 in Spain. In the meantime he is known in Bilbao as "El Gallo" ("The Rooster ") because of his constant performance. He also became the team's second captain. In the 1990s and at the beginning of the new millennium, a mainstay at Athletic and in the Spanish national team, Etxeberria's achievements in recent years and thus his standing in Spanish football have declined significantly. Out of loyalty to his club Athletic Bilbao, he played his last season 2009/2010 without a salary.
National team
After the Basque was top scorer at the Junior World Cup in 1995 , he was called up for the Spanish national team . He has been used in 53 games so far, scoring 12 goals. He participated with Spain in the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 and 2004 European Championships .
