Career

society

Born in a small suburb of Elche , Juanfran took his first steps in football in the Kelme CF youth team in Elche. When he was 16, he switched to Real Madrid's youth system . From 2003 to 2005 he was active for Real Madrid B , where he was able to convince those responsible for Real Madrid with good performances in the right midfield, occasionally also in attack. As a promising talent he was appointed to the squad of the first representation of the "Royal". In his first season it should only be enough for him to play 6 first division appearances. Nevertheless, his great talent was recognized and so it came about that he was loaned to Espanyol Barcelona for the 2005/06 season , where he immediately matured to become a regular player and together with his new team the Copa del Rey in a 4-1 final victory could win over Real Zaragoza . In the summer of 2006, Real transferred Juanfran to CA Osasuna , where he made 147 appearances and 12 goals in over four years.

In January 2011 Juanfran signed a contract with Atlético Madrid . He played eight and a half years for the club, which he left after the end of the 2018/19 season when his contract ended. With the club he was able to win numerous titles. In addition to the 2014 Spanish championship, also the 2012 and 2018 UEFA Europa League .

At the beginning of August 2019, Juanfran signed a contract with the Brazilian club São Paulo until May 2020.

National team

Juanfran won the 2004 U-19 European Football Championship in Switzerland with the Spanish selection . The final in Nyon was won 1-0 against the Turkish junior team. He also played for the U-20s in his country at the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates , when he and his team only lost 1-0 to the Brazilians in the final. In 2005 he was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against the eventual tournament winner from Argentina .

He made his debut in the national team on May 26, 2012 in a friendly against Serbia. It was a direct preparation game for the 2012 European Football Championship , where it was part of the Spanish squad, but was not used.

He was then called up in the first games of the World Cup qualification and played his first competitive game in the national jersey against France on October 16, 2012 as a substitute. After that, it took almost exactly a year before another deployment. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup he was back in the squad. After two defeats, the preliminary round was already clear and so he got in the third group game against Australia, which was won 3-0, his first appearance in a major tournament, and was allowed to play 90 minutes.

After playing in 7 of the 10 qualifying matches, he was re-entered into the Spanish squad at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . This time he was a regular player and played all games over the full season. However, as the defending champion, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Italy.
