Ghassan Salamé , Arabic غسان سلامة, DMG Ġassān Salāma , (* 1951 ) is a Lebanese political scientist, politician and UN advisor. He is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at Sciences Po in Paris. Salamé was Lebanon's Minister of Culture from 2000 to 2003; since 2017 he has been head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). On March 2, 2020, he submitted his resignation.

Life

Salamé belongs to the Greek Catholic religious community in Lebanon ( Melkites ). He has two daughters; the older, Léa Salamé (* 1979), works in France as a radio and television journalist.

After studying political science and literature at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, he became a professor at the American University of Beirut and at his alma mater. In 1987 he became CERI-CNRS Research Director at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) , where he worked as a professor until his retirement. Salamé co-founded the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) in 2010 and was its first dean. Ghassan Salamé has been a member of the board of the Swiss Center for Humanitarian Dialogue since 2011 . In 2017 he was elected as an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

As a scientist, he deals with politics in the Middle East, the democratization there and the religious-political conflicts. He researched the role of culture in international relations as well as practical experiences in the Arab and Islamic world.

From 2000 to 2003 he was Lebanese Minister of Culture in the government of Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri . In this function he was also chairman of the ministerial conference of the Organization internationale de la Francophonie (association of French-speaking countries). In 2003 he was political advisor to Sérgio Vieira de Mello , the UN special envoy in Iraq. Unlike the latter, Salamé survived the bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on August 19, 2003. From 2003 to 2007 and again in 2012 he was an advisor to the UN Secretary-General ( Kofi Annan or Ban Ki-moon ). He turned down another nomination as minister of culture in the Lebanese government of Najib Miqati in April 2005 for political and professional reasons.

On June 22, 2017, the United Nations appointed him Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to succeed Martin Kobler .
