Christian Wetklo (born January 11, 1980 in Marl ) is a German football goalkeeper and coach . He is under contract with the second team of FC Schalke 04 as goalkeeping coach .

Player career

societies

He started playing football at DJK Arminia Hassel , moved to SC Hassel in 1988 and in 1995 to the youth department of FC Schalke 04 , where he was active for three and a half years. As a teenager he was regularly appointed to the Westphalia team. In January 1999 he joined the youth team at Rot-Weiss Essen for half a year .

Wetklo's first station in the senior division was the second team from Rot-Weiss Essen , playing in the regional league , to which he joined as a 19-year-old for the 1999/2000 season .

For the 2000/01 season he moved to the amateur team of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the Oberliga Südwest . After two years of playing with the amateurs and several times as a substitute goalkeeper for the professionals in second division games, Wetklo played his first competitive game with the professionals in the summer of 2002. In the penalty shoot-out of the first round match for the DFB Cup at SpVgg Unterhaching , the goalkeeper saved a penalty ; Wetklo was not used in the 2nd Bundesliga at the time.

Christian Wetklo (2006)

Wetklo completed his first professional league games after the Mainz team rose in the second half of the 2004/05 Bundesliga season when he replaced Dimo Wache, who was injured for several weeks . He made his Bundesliga debut on February 19, 2005 (22nd matchday) in a goalless draw in the home game against Arminia Bielefeld with a substitution at the second half for Dimo Wache. At the beginning of the second half of the following season he benefited from another serious Wache injury that made him the goalkeeper of Mainz until his own shoulder injury in the third last game of the season.

Wetklo also benefited from an injury to his competitor in the 2010/11 season . This time it was Heinz Müller who tore a cruciate ligament in preparation for the season . After completing the first half of the season, the recovered Müller was again the goalkeeper of the 05er. At the end of October 2011 Wetklo came into play in the 1-0 victory in the second main round of the DFB Cup at Hannover 96 and held a penalty in the last minute of extra time. From then on, he established himself as a regular goalkeeper and played the remaining league games from the 11th match day - except for two -. In the following season he played 31 of 34 league games.

After it was announced in February 2014 that Wetklo after 14 years at the end of the season 2013/14 would leave the club he joined in the summer 2014 to second division promoted SV Darmstadt 98 . At the end of July 2014, shortly before the start of the season, Darmstadt 98 and Wetklo agreed to terminate the contract by mutual agreement, which initially made him without a club.

But only a few weeks later, his former youth club, FC Schalke 04 , signed him as an experienced goalkeeper in view of the injuries of Fabian Giefer , substitute in the first team, and Louis Hülsmann , substitute in the second, which was a childhood dream at the end of his career fulfilled. Up until matchday 13, Wetklo was part of the Schalke Bundesliga team behind regular goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann . After returning Giefers he was in the second team of miners , the U 23 integrated, and should be brought back into the first team if necessary. However, this only happened when absolutely necessary: When the ferryman injured himself and Giefer made his debut for Schalke, Timon Wellenreuther , who was active in the second team with Wetklo, was given the opportunity to sit on the bench in the Bundesliga. Debutant Giefer also injured himself on the 19th match day after only two games, so that Wetklo was the next six Bundesliga games behind the young Wellenreuth goalkeeper. After that, the ferryman was operational again, and Wetklo returned to the second crew without being used. His hope for a debut on the last day of the season was not fulfilled.

After his contract expired, Wetklo was initially without a club, before he was hired a few weeks later as goalkeeping coach of the Schalke U23s for the 2015/16 season and at the same time remained active as a player in the fourth-class Regional League West . In the second team, he played his first competitive game in a Schalke jersey on August 2, 2015, the first matchday.

National team

He made his debut in the national jersey on August 8, 1997 in Oberhaching in the test international match of the U-17 national team , which won 5-1 against the Oman team. He was also used on August 21st and 24th in Hard in the 4-0 win against the Costa Rican team and in the 5-2 win against the Austrian team.

Wetklo took part in the U-17 World Cup held in Egypt from September 4 to 21, 1997 and came in the third group game in a 1-1 draw against the hosts' selection for his only tournament game. He finished the tournament with the team in fourth place after the game for third place against the Spanish team was lost 2-1.

He completed his last international match on March 10, 1998 in Kitzingen in the 2-4 defeat against the Ukraine.

Coaching career

Wetklo has been in possession of the A-Trainer license since February 2016 .

When TSV Wackernheim Wetklo 2011 was youth coach . In the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons he coached the D2 and D1 youth teams of TSV Schott Mainz . For the 2014/15 season Wetklo took over the men's team of the District League A Mainz-Bingen playing TSV Wacker home . He ended this engagement after a few games because of his move to FC Schalke 04.

On March 5, 2015 Wetklo was coach of SuS Bertlich from Herten in the district league B, whose head of the soccer department is a brother-in-law Wetklo, until the end of the season .
