The Hoy Sound High Lighthouse , German Hoy Sound High lighthouse , is a lighthouse on the Scottish Orkney island of Graemsay . The lighthouse has been in operation since 1851 and has been automated since 1978. As an engineer, Alan Stevenson was responsible for the planning. In 1977 the lighthouse was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. With the Hoy Sound Low Lighthouse there is a second lighthouse on Graemsay.

description

Landside outbuildings

The lighthouse is located on the northeast headland of the small island. With a height of 34 m it protrudes from the flat landscape and is therefore a landmark that can be seen from afar. For the construction of the six-storey tower, material from a quarry on Hoy was initially used, but it turned out to be too soft, so that stones from others were used Islands had to be imported.

These were hewn in Stromness and then transported to Graemsay. The masonry is made of sandstone . A dome-shaped lantern sits on the sixth floor. A cast iron railing runs around the cantilevered platform . The associated one-story residential buildings have Egyptian details. A quarry stone wall encloses the area. The wall was originally higher, but had to be partially removed because it could not withstand the strong winds on Graemsay permanently.
