Walter Zwickhofer (born June 11, 1924 ) is a former German soccer player.

Career

Zwickhofer belonged to FC Schalke 04 , for which he was initially in the Gauliga Westfalen from 1942 to 1944 , in one of initially 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as the uniform top division in the German Reich , the 1944/45 season in the group 1 of the Gauliga Westfalen divided into three groups played point games. The latter came to a complete standstill at the end of September 1944 due to the unusually harsh onset of winter and the lack of players capable of using the field. During this time he won the Gaume Championship twice and played the first round match at Spielverein 06 Kassel, which he won 8-1 on May 2, 1943 . He also took part in the competition for the Tschammer Cup in 1942 and played all five rounds, including the semi-finals, which his team won 2-0 on October 25 against Werder Bremen and thus made it to the final. In this one, which was lost 2-0 to TSV 1860 Munich on November 15th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium , he was not used.

After the end of the Second World War , he first played from 1945 to 1947 in Group 1 of the 1st Division West , the later division called Landesliga Westfalen . He was not used in the final of the 1947 Westphalia Championship against the winner of Group 2, Borussia Dortmund, which was lost 3-2 on May 18 in front of 30,000 spectators in Herne. The final of the Westphalia Championship a year earlier was prohibited by the British military authorities.

Since no Oberliga West was established at that time, he took part in the final round of the British Zone Championship with FC Schalke 04 , but failed on June 29, 1947 in the replay of the quarter-finals that had previously remained goalless on June 22, 1947 against Hamburger SV , with 0: 2.

From 1947 to 1956 he was in the Oberliga West , one of five seasons as the highest German division, and in 1951 won the West German Championship. As a result, he and his team took part in the final round of the German Championship , which was held in two groups of four teams each . In Group 1 he played all six games, but the group winner who made it into the final was 1. FC Kaiserslautern . The following season, the team was even qualified as runner-up for the finals, in which he also played all six games in Group 1 , but finished last.

In 1954/55 he took part with his team in the competition for the DFB-Pokal and moved with her, after six victorious rounds - including two replay games - into the final. The game played on May 21, 1955 in Braunschweig in front of 25,000 spectators was lost with the winning goal scored in the 86th minute by Oswald Traub , player of Karlsruher SC , 2: 3.

For FC Schalke 04 he played since his league debut on April 24, 1949 (26th matchday), in a 5-1 win in the home game against TSG Vohwinkel 80 , until March 4th, 1956 (24th matchday) 5: 1 win in the home game against Schwarz-Weiß Essen , 176 top division games in which he scored 13 goals.
