Uli Maslo (born July 6, 1938 in Wattenscheid ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player.
player
Uli Maslo began his active career at SG Wattenscheid 09 . In 1959 he moved to Rot-Weiss Essen , where he played 14 games in three seasons, in which he scored four goals. In 1962 Maslo moved to the Dutch club HFC Haarlem .
Trainer
From 1972 to 1977 Uli Maslo worked as a youth and assistant coach at FC Schalke 04 . In the youth field, he led both the Schalke B-youth and the A-youth to the German championship. On December 21, 1977, he surprisingly succeeded Friedel Rausch as Schalke's head coach. At the end of the 1977/78 season, Schalke finished ninth in the Bundesliga and Maslo's contract was not extended.
After two short interludes at Borussia Dortmund and four years at Eintracht Braunschweig , Maslo moved to the Persian Gulf , where he coached clubs from Bahrain and Qatar . However, Maslo celebrated his greatest successes during his time at FC St. Pauli , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1995.
Most recently, Maslo worked as a contact for the Qatari Football Association in Germany and caused a sensation when he wanted to win the Brazilian striker Aílton for the Qatari national football team .
Game system
For most teams, Uli Maslo preferred a 3-2-4-1 system. This defensive system was characterized by the fact that the midfielders immediately moved up to support the striker. Uli Maslo demanded a complicated system of running paths from his players. This system was considered to be one of the most elaborate systems in the Bundesliga in the 1990s, when most of the other teams in the league were still playing 3-1-4-2. It required a high level of discipline, but because of its complexity, it was often difficult to implement by the trained teams. With the FC. In St. Pauli he played it in a slightly modified form as 3-3-3-1. Maslo played without a full-back and with two points in a row. With this system, Uli Maslo managed to keep St. Pauli in 1995/1996.
