PlaneShift (English, German about "level change") is a free MMORPG that takes place in a fantasy world based on the Middle Ages.

history

The game idea comes from Luca Pancallo , who developed a two-dimensional version in 1994 and presented it to the public in 1996. Since no company could be found to support the game, the project had to be discontinued in 1998. In 2000, Pancallo was able to start developing a three-dimensional version of the game with an international team. The corresponding software is currently still in the development stage.

The client program is available as multi- platform software for Linux , Windows and macOS . The source code is produced by a developer community , founded by Luca Pancallo and managed by the non-profit organization Atomic Blue . The engine code is based on the free 3D graphics framework Crystal Space . However, the owner of the copyright to the PlaneShift software is Atomic Blue , the publication takes place under its own license with the exception of the source code, which is published under GPL .

A special feature of PlaneShift is that the versions that have appeared so far and all versions that will appear in the future can be used free of charge, i.e. H. the client software is available free of charge and there are no time-dependent usage fees as with other MMORPGs. There are currently over 450,000 registered users, with up to 100 online at the same time.

The previously published development stages of the software were named as follows:

  • 0.1 Atomic Blue , May 2002
  • 0.2 Molecular Blue , March 2003
  • 0.3 Crystal Blue , December 2004
  • 0.4 Steel Blue , March 2008
  • 0.5 Arcane Chrysalis , December 2009
  • 0.6 Azure Spirit , November 2013

Skills

There are no professions in PlaneShift. In their place can over 50 different skills ( skills to be trained, of which are implemented at present only the following and have practical implications):

  • Combat skills (armor, all branches of weapon with the exception of combat staffs)
  • Magic skills (six magical, so-called ways, as well as the enchanting of gemstones to produce magical objects)
  • Skills for raw material extraction (mining, harvesting, fishing)
  • Crafting skills (alchemy, baking, cooking, herbalism, blade forging, leather tailoring, metallurgy, armor repair and forging, shield making, weapon repair)
  • Further skills: empathy (for interacting with animal companions), making music (in order to be able to play any user-defined pieces of music on instruments in the game), and physical hardening (which provides the game character with additional life points in combat).

In order to reach a higher level in a skill, one must both acquire theoretical knowledge with a non-player character ( NPC ) and improve practice by applying the skill.

Communication in the game

The game can be played using English commands (macros) or partly via mouse. Communication with NPCs takes place in two different ways. Within quests, windows with various options facilitate communication. Outside of the quests you can chat with the NPCs in natural language, which is analyzed by a parser , and learn a lot about the game world.

There are IRC channels available, which allow a conversation with a certain player, or with all players in the area; preferably in English.

Players can form groups for a short time or into guilds for the long term. Guild communication usually takes place in the guild members' mother tongue.

Course of the game

After registering for free, you can set up up to four different characters, using a quick process or by compiling a detailed character background. With the first game character you go through the tutorial, which explains the basic game mechanics as well as the great importance of role play within PlaneShift. By killing monsters, by crafting, by extracting raw materials, solving various tasks ( quests ) or participating in game master events ( GM events ) you receive progress points, sometimes also items that you sell or auction to other players can. With progress points and money you can learn skills or improve character attributes (e.g. strength, endurance).

Game characters who die enter the Death Realm , a branched labyrinth from which a hidden exit leads back to the normal game world. After passing through the Death Realm, your character is given a curse for about 30 minutes (Dakkru's Curse), which halves the character attributes (stats). Affected by this curse are:

  • Agility
  • Charisma (charisma)
  • Endurance
  • Intelligence
  • physical strength
  • Willpower (Will).
