Willi Neuberger (born April 15, 1946 in Klingenberg am Main ) is a former German soccer player .

career

Neuberger initially played for his home club TuS Röllfeld until he was 20 . In 1966 he completed a trial training at Kickers Offenbach , but was not obliged because they didn't want any "unfinished" players there. Instead, he came to Borussia Dortmund in Westphalia , where he quickly became a crowd favorite, just like on his subsequent player stations. Two years later, Neuberger advanced to the national team, but was no longer called up after two senior internationals, although the criticism had confirmed that he performed well, especially for his second (and last) international match against Brazil . Instead of him, the Dortmund club colleague Sigi Held was preferred to the left wing position, where Neuberger was initially mainly used. He came on March 29, 1972 to a use in the German B national team in the 2-0 victory in Hungary.

During his long Bundesliga career from 1966 to 1983, in which he played for Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen , Wuppertaler SV and Eintracht Frankfurt , Neuberger was used in almost all field player positions. His speed and technical ball skills enabled him to be so versatile. He was probably most effective on the left wing, and his favorite was to play Libero .

Willi Neuberger celebrated his greatest successes with Eintracht Frankfurt. There he won the DFB Cup in 1975 and 1981 and the UEFA Cup in 1980 .

With 520 Bundesliga games (63 goals), Neuberger was a record Bundesliga player for almost two years before he was surpassed by Klaus Fichtel in 1985 . For Frankfurt he made 37 appearances in the DFB Cup with seven goals. He played three cup games for Wuppertaler SV, 16 games in which he scored five goals for Werder Bremen and 11 cup games and four goals in the DFB Cup for BVB.

He also made an appearance in the European Cup for BVB and 14 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt with one goal and in the UEFA Europa League , the then UEFA Cup, made two appearances for Wuppertaler SV and 25 games with two goals for Eintracht Frankfurt.
