Career
Coaching career
Horst Franz began his coaching career at DJK Gütersloh and then moved to Austria, where he replaced the Slovak Arnošt Hložek as coach of First Vienna FC during the 1971/72 season . In 1973 Franz moved to SC Eisenstadt , which he looked after for two years. After the relegation of Eisenstadt to the second division, he took over the coaching position at SK VÖEST Linz , for which he also worked for two seasons.
He then made a name for himself in the German Bundesliga as a specialist in relegation battles. His first coaching position in German professional football was Union Solingen in the 1977/78 season in the 2nd Bundesliga . In December 1980 he broke his contract in order to switch to Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld as a rescuer , as this was threatened with relegation. Franz was successful and he managed to stay in the league. For the 1982/83 season he moved to Karlsruher SC , but remained there luckless and was dismissed in winter. In the autumn of 1983 Borussia Dortmund took over and saved the class here too. In 1987 he was also a coach at FC Schalke 04 during the winter break , but here he failed to stay up.
In addition to Solingen, he also coached Arminia Bielefeld (1985-1987), Rot-Weiss Essen (1987), Schalke 04 (1988/89) and 1. FSV Mainz 05 (1995) in the 2nd Bundesliga . Here he was soon released again after seven games and 0:13 goals. He also coached SV Babelsberg 03 in 2001/02 .
Horst Franz is still connected to football today; in 2006 he analyzed football in Kyrgyzstan on behalf of the Russian Football Association. He is active in the sighting and consulting for some clubs in the field of scouting .
