Herbert Meyer (born June 12, 1948 in Bremen ) is a former German football player . He played a total of 201 times in the Bundesliga in his career .
Career
Via the youth teams and the amateur team, Meyer made it into the professional squad of Werder Bremen in 1968 . He played his first Bundesliga game on October 5, 1968 (9th matchday) against Eintracht Braunschweig , when he came on for Helmut Schimeczek in the 68th minute . In the 1968/69 season he came to two more missions against MSV Duisburg and FC Bayern Munich . In the two following seasons he was used more often with 13 and 16 appearances, but it was mostly substitutes.
In 1971 he moved to Kickers Offenbach in the then second-rate Regionalliga Süd , with which he was promoted to the Bundesliga in the first season with teammates Walter Bechtold , Fred-Werner Bockholt , Horst Gecks , Sigfried Held and Erwin Kostedde . Meyer played 23 rounds in the Regionalliga Süd under OFC coach Kuno Klötzer and scored two goals. In the Bundesliga seasons 1972/73 and 1973/74 he was an integral part of the team with 33 league appearances each. In both years Meyer and his team reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup , but the entry into the final was denied to him due to defeats against 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV . On August 31, 1973 (5th matchday) he also scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 4-0 win over his ex-club Werder Bremen with the goal to lead them 1-0.
For the 1974/75 season he moved back to his north German homeland and he was hired by the second division Hannover 96 . Even with the Lower Saxony Meyer was able to make the promotion to the Bundesliga perfect in his first season. Coach Helmut Kronsbein played the defender in 31 league games in 1974/75 alongside regular players Franz-Josef Pauly , Rainer Stiller , Peter Anders , Gerd Kasperski , Bernd Wehmeyer , Peter Dahl and Roland Stegmayer . The 96 defense conceded only 39 goals in 38 competitive games. But after only one season of first class - Meyer completed 24 Bundesliga games - Hanover had to return to the 2nd division in 1976. Meyer, however, stayed in the Bundesliga with his move to Borussia Dortmund . In Dortmund he was never an unconditional regular under coaches such as Otto Rehhagel or Udo Lattek , but he made 79 Bundesliga games in the four seasons at Borussia.
Throughout his career, Meyer made 201 appearances in the Bundesliga, in which he scored three goals. There were also 31 second division games and 29 games in the DFB Cup.
