Office machine mechanic was a craft occupation . The office machine mechanic repaired, from the classic typewriter also maintained calculating machines , copiers , dictation machines , accounting machines and all mechanical utensils that are used in an office, right up to office furniture .

He also practiced this profession in the field of data processing and punch card technology . There was no comparable vocational training in this area.

The job

In 1808 the first typewriter is said to have been built by the Italian Pellegrino Turri di Castelnuovo. The most obvious advantage of the typewriter was that a single key press was enough for a letter, while an average of five lines had to be drawn with the pen. In 1897 the Prussian government allowed machine letters to be sent to authorities. In 1999, the apprenticeship as an office machine mechanic became an information electronics technician for office systems technology.

The profession of office machine mechanic disappeared in Germany in 1999; the typewriters were replaced by computers and printers .

Situation in Austria

Office machine mechanic was a recognized apprenticeship in Austria until 1998 . By the regulation of the Minister of Economics BGBl. II 263/1997 the apprenticeship office machine mechanic was repealed and replaced by the apprenticeship “ communication technician - office communication”.
