Ernst Schomer

Ernst Schomer (born March 26, 1915 in Wiesbaden ; † May 1, 2005 in Minden ) was a German film architect, architect, painter, medalist and art teacher.

After graduating from high school in Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains, Schomer was drafted into labor service and served in the Wehrmacht for the entire duration of the Second World War (as a Stuka fighter pilot over the Soviet Union ). In 1945 he was taken prisoner of war for one year. During this time Schomer, who had already drawn himself as a soldier, worked as an outfitter for the camp theater. In the first post-war years he began to paint again and exhibited his pictures; he also earned his living as an illustrator of books.

In 1953, Ernst Schomer made contact with German entertainment films. He began his cinema career at the side of the experienced production designer Alfred Bütow . Until 1968, Schomer designed the sets for a number of high-quality to high-class feature film productions, mainly in collaboration with colleagues; from the early 1960s primarily in association with Hans-Jürgen Kiebach . After his most important and elaborate work, the decorations for Robert Siodmak's monumental antique epic “ Battle for Rome ” filmed in Romania , Ernst Schomer withdrew from film in 1969.

In the following years until his retirement in 1981 he worked as an art teacher at the municipal high school in Barntrup . In the last years of his life, Schomer mainly worked as a painter; The last major work of the staunch Prussian admirer, produced from 2003 onwards, was entitled ' Frederick the Great gives speech to his generals in the Battle of Leuthen '.

Suffering from cardiac arrhythmias for some time, Schomer suffered a severe stroke in March 2005 . A few weeks later he died in his home town of Minden. Schomer's son Wulf worked as an art professor and teaches a. a. at universities in Osnabrück and Vechta .
