action

Years after the execution of the Romanov family in Yekaterinburg , the fate of the Tsar's daughter Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova is puzzled. A former Austrian prisoner of war named Franz Svoboda reports that Anastasia survived the shooting of the family and was brought to Romania.

In 1920 an unknown woman jumps into the Landwehr Canal in Berlin. In the hospital, she refuses to give her name and origin. The doctor treating you will find scars in the head area, possibly from blows and gunshot wounds, as well as deformed feet.

Miss Peuthert, who is temporarily staying in the clinic for an examination, recognizes the Tsar's daughter Anastasia in her and immediately informs some Russian nobles. Baroness Frau von Pleskau cannot confirm the identity of the stranger. However, valet Volkov recognizes Anastasia because she knows details about the tsarist family and recognizes him as well.

When the stranger realizes that the nobles are only interested in money, she flees to Fraulein Peuthert. She tells her that she was brought to Romania by two brothers named Tchaikovsky. She got together with one of the brothers and had a son named Alexej, who was put up for adoption. When Miss Peuthert calls a journalist and the stranger refuses to provide any information, her hostess throws her in front of the door.

Princess Irene of Prussia and Crown Princess Cäcilie express doubts about their identity. The stranger is initially happy to see her aunt Irene, but is disappointed when she introduces herself under a false name. The encounter with Grand Duchess Olga is more harmonious, both recognize each other. Olga's mother, the Tsar's mother, refuses to accept that the stranger is Anastasia.

Years later, in 1927, the stranger lived with the Duke of Leuchtenberg . There she receives a visit from Chleb Bodkin, a former family friend; both immediately recognize each other and become friends again.

At the same time, a woman reports to the press who thinks she recognizes her former roommate Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish field worker, in the stranger . The Commissioner handling the case feels compelled to investigate because of the significance of the new circumstances. Two visitors to Herzog Leuchtenberg's estate pretend to be Franziska's siblings, but turn out to be fraudsters. Finally, the stranger accepts Chleb's suggestion to go to America with him to relax there.

In America, the stranger is welcomed by the higher circles, but the talk about an article in the New York Times is making the rounds. This article describes the stranger as a swindler and Chleb as her henchman in order to get the Tsar's fortune. The stranger tells Chleb that Tsar Nicholas II deposited 5 million gold rubles in the Bank of England for each of his children. If she does not claim her share within a period of 10 years, which will now expire in a few days, it will go to Anastasia's aunts Xenia and Olga. Princess Katharina and her husband are indignant about Chleb's intervention and offer to take care of the unknown if she renounces her inheritance. The stranger breaks away from Chleb when he advises her to accept the offer.

The stranger moves in with Mrs. Stevens, who immediately founds a company to represent the stranger 's interests . When a German lawyer shows up and tells the stranger that she has been ripped off, she tries to escape, but is locked up by Mrs. Stevens. The stranger had a fit of rage and was taken to a sanatorium in Ilten near Hanover ( Wahrendorffsche Anstalten ).

The treating psychiatrist can not find any signs of mental illness in the stranger . In 1931 she finally left the institution and was picked up by two police officers in the forest. Friedrich Ernst, Prince of Saxony-Altenburg, invites you to visit him.

In 1953 the stranger was visited by Crown Princess Cäcilie in her forest hut, into which she had moved 7 years earlier, who wanted to help her to be recognized as Anastasia after all. The stranger, on the other hand, has stopped looking for happiness in other people; instead, she has recognized the inner tranquility of loneliness as true wealth.

Reviews

“A dramatic fate of women against the historical background of the years 1918–1953, laid out in the form of a factual report. Despite the subtle portrayal by Lilli Palmer, the cinematic brilliance of the American 'Anastasia' version from the same year is missing. "
